“CinderKen--The Musical”

Disclaimer: Digimon doesn't belong to me. The Rogers & Hammerstein version of Cinderella doesn't belong to me. I am poor.

Author's Notes: The original script for this was from the version of Cinderella aired by Disney (the version with Brandy and Whitney Houston.) I didn't use the exact script because that would be boring, so there's lots of stuff added or changed, hence the rating. Yaoi, yuri, some swearing and a bit of innuendo later on. The only couple I'll give away right now is Kensuke. (I always write Kensuke. Love Kensuke.) Any character bashing on this fic is either unintentional or all in good fun. I more or less like everybody. Enjoy!

(We begin on a stage. A girl with short brown hair and glasses steps out on stage. She bows to the audience and begins the narration.)

Klitch: A long, long time ago in a village far, far away, there lived a young man named Osamu. With Osamu lived his dear brother Ken, whom he prized above all else. They lived in a beautiful estate, where Ken had all the dresses---excuse me, where Ken had all the comforts he could ever want. Then, one day, Osamu met a beautiful--

Yamato: (Offstage) You got that right!

Klitch: Ahem. Osamu met a beautiful young man named Yamato, who had two daughters from his first marriage to a woman named Jun, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. His daughters’ names were Hikari and Sora, and they were as cold-hearted as they come. Yamato and his daughters looked down upon Ken, but they put up with him because Yamato was hoping to get Osamu’s fortune when he died. Unfortunately for poor Ken, one day Osamu was run over by a stray chicken cart and killed. Now Ken lives as the family’s servant, where he refers to Yamato as his wicked stepfather, despite the fact that they’re technically stepbrothers, and where he calls Hikari and Sora his wicked stepsisters, even though they’re more like stepnieces. For their part, the rest of the family refers to him as CinderKen, because he sits near the fire and watches the cinders fly. But Ken has a dream, a dream that involves a certain boy....And here, dear friends, is where our story begins....

Klitch moves offstage as the curtains open, revealing a busy street. People walk too and fro happily, and a male voice is heard singing over the sound.

Unidentified voice :

Impossible....for a plain yellow pumpkin
To become a golden carriage
Impossible....for a plain country bumpkin
And a prince to join in marriage

(spoken)

Sunglasses, though cool, merely help you see
And dreamers, never make their dreams be.

(sings)

Impossible!!!

The overture plays as the people continue to move about. Eventually three figures fight their way to the front : Yamato, Sora, and Hikari.

Yamato: Come along, girls!

Sora: Move it!

Hikari: Hurry up!

Ken comes weaving through the crowd to join them. He is carrying many packages. Unlike the others, who are dressed richly, Ken is wearing an old outfit of dull brown. The group passes by a cart and Sora grabs a familiar blue hat off of it, putting it on her head.

Sora: What do you think, Father? Is it me?

Yamato: Umm....How do I break this to you gently?

Hikari: (Grabbing the hat) Let me see! I bet it looks better on me!

Sora: Does not!

Hikari: Does too!

Yamato: (Sighs) Why did none of you inherit my unbelievable fashion sense? Ooh, look at that! (Yamato sees his reflection in one of the store windows and runs over to it, cooing.) You’re a pretty Yamato, aren’t you? Yes you are!

Sora: CinderKen! CinderKen!

Ken: I told you to stop calling me that!

Sora: Don’t be insolent. (She grabs the hat back and puts it on her head.) Do you think this looks better on me--

Hikari: (Grabbing the hat back) Or me?

Ken: Uh...do I have to answer right away?

Sora & Hikari: YES!!!

Ken: I think it makes you both look like dykes. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Sora: What would you know?

Hikari: He doesn’t know the first thing about hats! Hey! (Sora has grabbed the hat back.)

Sora: Mine!

Hikari: No, mine!

Sora & Hikari: FATHER!!

The two run over to try to pull Yamato away from his reflection.

Yamato: You are a pretty Yamato! Pretty, pretty Yamato!

Ken rolls his eyes and starts wandering through the streets, gazing longingly at the carts full of neat things.

Ken:

The sweetest sounds I’ll ever hear
Are still inside my head
>The kindest words I’ll ever know
Are waiting to be said
The most entrancing sight of all
Is yet for me to see
and the dearest love in all the world
is waiting somewhere for me
is waiting somewhere....
somewhere for me.

Yamato has finally been dragged away from the window. He comes over to Ken, followed by Sora and Hikari. Sora is wearing the blue hat, while Hikari is wearing a similar hat in pink.

Yamato: CinderKen! (He thrusts some bags into Ken’s arms)

Sora: Have you ever seen such a lazy boy in all your life?

Hikari: Never.

Yamato: Keep a hold on those things, CinderKen. Oh! Is that a mirror shop I spy? (He goes running off. His daughters sigh and follow him, but Ken lags behind.)

Elsewhere, on the other side of the market, Prince Daisuke comes walking. He is eyeing all the food eagerly. He wears a plain outfit that shows none of the marks of royalty, but his goggles are still on his head.

Daisuke:

The sweetest sounds I’ll ever hear
Are still inside my head
My sister still tells me
That means I’m going mad.
The most entrancing sight of all
Is yet for me to see
And the dearest love in all the world
Is waiting somewhere for me...
Is waiting somewhere...somewhere for me.

Ken comes wandering near him. The two walk stride for stride, each on one side of a cart and not seeing the other.

Ken:

The sweetest sounds I’ll ever hear
Are still inside my head
The kindest words I’ll ever hear

Daisuke:

The kindest words I’ll ever hear
Are waiting to be said
The most entrancing sight of all
Is yet for me to see!

Ken:

The most entrancing sight of all
Is yet for me to see!

Both:

And the dearest love in all the world

Daisuke:

Is waiting somewhere for me

Ken:

Waiting somewhere...

Daisuke:

Is waiting somewhere....

Daisuke turns to pass by the cart and runs straight into Ken, knocking the packages from his arms.

Daisuke: Oops! Sorry miss.

Ken: I’m a boy, you idiot.

Daisuke: No way! Really? Cause you look like a girl.

Ken: Are you always this rude or is this how you talk to all the boys?

Daisuke: Uh....what was the question? Oh, here, let me help! (He starts helping Ken collect up the fallen packages, including a very strange selection of hats and a variety of mirrors.)

Ken: Thanks for your help.

Their eyes meet for a moment, then Ken turns to leave.

Daisuke: Wait! What’s your name?

Ken: Ken. My family calls me CinderKen.

Daisuke: Uh...‘scuse me?

Ken: CinderKen. I like to sit by the fire and watch the cinders fly.

Daisuke: Oh! I get it! Cinder-Ken! Cute!

Ken: Charming. Call me by that name and I will hurt you very badly. (He starts to walk away, and Daisuke follows behind.)

Daisuke: Geez, Ken, you don’t have to be so rude. How’s a guy supposed to get into your good graces?

Ken: Who wants to know?

Daisuke: Well....me. A charming stranger.

Ken: Don’t flatter yourself.

Daisuke: Are you gonna answer my question or not?

Ken: Well...I’d like someone to treat me like a human being for once, with kindness and respect.

Daisuke: You, uh, don’t get a lot of that?

Ken: I live a pretty sheltered life.

Daisuke: I can relate. Everyday the same routine...

Ken: Until you just want to run away...

Both: And never come back! (They laugh)

Yamato suddenly comes up from behind him.

Yamato: I thought I told you never to talk to strangers!

Ken: (Under his breath) There aren’t many people stranger than you.

Yamato: What was that?

Ken: I said, I’m sorry.

Daisuke: Well, uh, see you around, CinderKen! (Off Ken’s glare) I mean, Ken!

Daisuke leaves. Ken stares after him, entranced.

Yamato: What are you doing with those packages? Come on! (Turning)

Ken:

The most entrancing sight of all
Is yet for me to see

Ken & Daisuke:

And the dearest love in all the world
Is waiting somewhere for me.
Is waiting somewhere...

Yamato: (Returning) Stop singing and hurry up!

Ken: (Sighing) Yes, Stepfather. (Looks back longingly the way Daisuke went.)

Ken & Daisuke:

Somewhere for me...

Daisuke is seen getting into a royal carriage. Ken sees this and hurries away. Inside the carriage, Daisuke is met by the royal advisor, Taichi.

Taichi: Why the disguise again, Your Highness? And why do you always have to take my goggles, for God’s sake?!

Daisuke: Hey! I’m the prince, and I can take what I want. These goggles are mine now. And it was fun to be among real people for a change.

Taichi: And what am I, a hologram?

Daisuke: You don’t count.

By now, the scene has moved into the castle. Daisuke enters his parents’ bedroom, trying to get away from Taichi, who keeps trying to take his goggles back.

Taichi: Come on, Prince, give them up!

Daisuke: You wanted to see me, Mother?

Mimi looks up from where she sits on the pink plush bed, reading an issue of Seventeen magazine. Jyou sits on the opposite side of the bed, muttering something about germs. Daisuke’s sister Princess Miyako is reading over Mimi’s shoulder.

Miyako: (In a sing-song voice) Ha ha, Daisuke’s in trouble!

Daisuke: Shaddup.

Mimi: Daisuke, darling, where have you been? Your father and I have been worried. Well, your father’s been worried, at any rate.

Jyou: Are you trying to make me paranoid or something?

Miyako: Too late.

Daisuke: So what’s going on?

Mimi: I was planning a little family get together. Just the family...

Daisuke: Uh-huh.

Mimi: And a few friends...

Daisuke: Uh-huh.

Mimi: And all the eligible young women in the kingdom.

Daisuke: MOTHER!

Mimi: Oh, okay, okay. All the eligible young men too.

Daisuke: Score!

Mimi: Yay! I can’t wait to decorate this place up!

Miyako: (Flipping through Mimi’s magazine) If Daisuke marries another boy, will his husband be called Queen or King #2?

Jyou: I’m not sure. Maybe we should create an official title just in case.

Mimi: Well it’s not my fault he’s bisexual.

Jyou: Don’t look at me. At least Miyako’s normal.

Miyako starts whistling innocently.

Mimi: Taichi!

Taichi: Yes, my Queen?

Mimi: Take down this proclamation.

His Royal Highness Daisuke Rupert,
Windamehr Ladameir, Carl Alexander,
Francois Reginal, Lanalot Herman...

Taichi: Herman?

Mimi: Herman.
Gregory James
(he’ll thank us for it later)
Is giving a ball!

Taichi hurries out into the streets, carrying the proclamation. As he walks, he passes by Yamato, who actually stops looking at himself for a moment and stares at Taichi.

Taichi:

The Prince is Giving a Ball!
His royal highness, Daisuke Rupert,
son of Her Majesty Queen Mimi Malina,
Charley Germantrude Gueenavier Mazy....

Yamato: (Staring at Taichi somewhat dreamily)

Mazy?

Taichi: Mazy.
Margarita...
is giving a ball!

Townspeople:

The prince is giving a ball!
The prince is giving a ball!

Taichi: That’s what I just said! Stop mimicking me!

Yamato:

The prince is giving a ball
Girls, fix up your dresses and hair
For if the prince is giving a ball
Dear Taichi is sure to be there!

Sora:

Oh if the prince would only propose to me!

Hikari:

I wish that he’d propose to me!

Yamato:

Just leave the hair and clothes to me!

All:

The prince is giving a ball!

Taichi stands in the middle of the ballroom, ordering around various Digimon who are decorating things. Mimi sits nearby, picking out the perfect shade of pink.

Taichi:

Now if you please the crown decrees
some peau de soie with frills
A silky satine in aubregine, a pink
The Queen that thrills.
Now surely I'll need a side of ham,
and lots of beef fillets
Some marbelized steak, a rack of lamb
and veal to raise to braise.

Daisuke: Mmm, now I’m hungry!

Miyako: You’re always hungry!

Taichi:

Limburger, swiss, and gourmandine
Cheddar, gryere, and blue
Chunks of swiss in barrels, please
make sure that its holey too!
Puddings and pies and rum sufflets
Succulent chocolate rounds
Cream puffs they can chew away to
gain some royal pounds.

Mimi: I’d like my cream puffs fat free, please.

Taichi: (Sweatdropping) Um....of course, your Majesty.

Townspeople:

The prince is giving a ball!
The prince is giving a ball!

Daisuke: Doesn’t everyone know that already? Why do they insist on repeating it?

Taichi:

His royal highness...

600 roses, 800 lilies.
Daisuke Rupert...
1000 oranges, 2000 plums
