| The Adirondacks: a place of color, mountains, lakes, rivers and streams, a place of mixed hardwood and soft wood forests, and a place where the experience of it is had in black and white and shades of grey. Long winters, deep snow and cold, uncertain springs that bring hordes of black flys but few tourists. Summer, sometimes warm but often cool and rainy. This is a land unto itself. It is a rain forest that sometimes becomes dangerously dry. The Adirondacks is a region in northern New York. About the size of the entire state of Vermont, its year-round population is only about 130,000. Almost half of the area is owned by the people and the state and is protected as "Forever Wild" by the constitution of the state. A majority of the balance is kept in forest by paper companies who see it as a resource and private individuals who see it as their own personal wilderness. It is a park, a forest preserve and a mountain range. It is where wilderness lurks behind a blue line drawn on maps. These pages and others connected to them will give you an idea about a place you may know only as a summer styled chair made famous by L.L. Bean. |
