Questions to ask of a breeder:
1. How long have you had the breed? How long have you been breeding. Why did you choose dachshunds?

2. Do you show? (not necessary if you're looking for a pet- but if the breeder is not showing, what $ are they investing in their dogs... are they there solely to have pups & make $? Also- show breeders TEND to be more aware of dachshund issues because at shows a lot of information is exchanged & there's more of an opportunity to learn. Show people are generally more aware of what a dachshund should be structurally & genetically- lineage, etc. This tends to keep you away and hopefully limit some defects that can arrise. Your breeder should know the breed inside & out- and be honest with you when questions arrise.)

3. How many dogs & How many litters per year?

4. If not showing- what is the goal for your kennel/dogs? Long term... what's the plan, where do you want to be? Are you involved with any clubs? (a good breeder will be showing- or at the very least involved with a kennel club, etc... and will have focus for their dogs/kennel- and more than likely the answer from a good breeder will not be financial.

(To clarify the financial aspect... when you are TRUELY involved with your dogs the $ you make is WAY less than the $ that goes out normally. If you get lucky you break even between food, bedding, shots, puppy care, club fees, and show costs- 1 weekend showing 1 dog is usually $75. I show 3 dogs per weekend I show... and try to show at least 1x per month.)

More to come... developing...
