                                     LION AND LILLIES
18X24 Prismacolor on Gray canson paper

When I first sat down to draw this still life I was intimidated by the lace. I felt at the time that there was
no way I'd be able to do the lace and make it look half way decent. So I procrastinated, doing the rest of the work first then finally I couldn't avoid it any more, the lace was the only thing left to do. I COULD have hinted at the lace but I wanted to go for the detail. I really wanted to show the color of the box underneath, and show that it was drapped partially over the quilt. Which I did by showing the colors of the material peeking through the holes in the lace.

What is ironic now when I look back on it, is that it wasn't all that hard. In fact doing the lace was quite fun. I think it is one of my better pieces. Scanning the drawing was the easy part putting it back together in Photoshop was a challenge. Some pieces wouldn't go together right, others had dark edges but with a little ingeniuty I was able to put it back together again without loosing anything.  For those who are interested in such things, the lion actually had a name on the base: LOWENBRAU. I chose to leave it out.

My favorite part of this piece was the quilt. I really enjoy doing drapery and admittedly this one was a challenge. Not only with the lace but with the quilt as well.
