Defrag
In Order To Keep Your System Running Fast and Smooth
You should defragment your Harddrive at least once a Month

Turn off Your Screensaver
(i.e. set it on "None" or 60 Minutes)
Messengers - Virusscan
Click Start-Programs
Accessories-System Tools
Maintenance Wizard
Be Sure To At Least Perform Scan and Defrag

Updating
Updating should be done at least once a Month
Get Your Microsoft Updates
Click Start
Above Your Programs should be "Windows Update"
Click it
(You need Internet Connection)
At Update Site Click on "Product Updates"
then follow Instructions

Updating Drivers

A device driver is the routine program that links the driver
to the operating system whenever you install a new piece of hardware
such as a CD-RW to your PC - it is necessary to install
the driver for that hardware
Drivers are also frequently updated to eliminate bugs
or to incorporate other changes
To download and install a new or updated driver
Connect to the Internet
Right-click My Computer
Click on Properties
Click Device Manager
Click on each device and a new window will open
Click on Drivers
it will tell you what drivers you have
Click on Update
it will check for the latest driver
and update it if you want to
You can also find updated versions of drivers
by visiting the manufacturers' websites

Deleting - Not just in Wordprocessor
This tip can work in any Windows program that lets you type � not just your word processor
To delete the word left of the cursor
press CTRL and hit the Backspace key
If the word is right of the cursor
press CTRL and hit the Delete key

ADD Locations To "Your Send To Menu"
Right Click "My Computer"
Choose Explore from Shortcut Menu
Open Drive C
Open Windows Folder
Open Send To Folder
Click "Up" Button
Right Click the Notepad Icon
Choose "Copy" from the Shortcut Menu
Click the "Back" Button
Choose Edit-Paste Shortcut
Press F2
Rename the Icon as Notepad
This may read very complicated, but it will get easier as you practice

To send something to your Floppy- Drive A
To learn how to use the Send To feature follow these steps
To start Find any .doc or gif or jpg (a Notepad, Word file or imagefile)
Right-click the file
Highlight Sent To
Then select 3� Floppy ( Drive A)

Copy - Cut - Paste
On any Document you can highlight text by "Left" clicking and moving the cursor left
once highlighted "Right" click and you see these options
Undo - erases
Cut - erases
Copy - copies "highlighted area"
Paste - pastes the copy onto new document
or anywhere on text page
Delete - erases
Select All - highlights whole page and eliminates
mouseover to the left

These Commands will do the same
The cut and paste collection allows you to cut out
replace, or rearrange any highlighted text or data
If you want to move a list from the bottom to the top
highlight the paragraph, copy, cut, and then paste it at the top of your document
Control + X
This command cuts out any highlighted text or data

Control + C
This command copies any highlighted text or data

Control + V
This command pastes any copied text or data
from the clipboard to any open application.
Position your cursor where you want the text to appear
You can cut and paste any text or data from
one Windows application to another
The copied information is held on the clipboard until you press paste

The F-keys or Function Keys
When working with files in Windows Explorer
you can save time by using your keyboard keys instead of your mouse
These Function keys work in Explorer

F2 - Renames object
F3 - Find: All files
F4 - Selects the Go to A Different Folder box
on the taskbar and moves down the entries
F5 - Refreshes current window
F6 - Moves among panes

Shift key Shorts (Your mouse on the fritz)
Windows has a few shortcuts that allow you to compute without the mouse
The Shift key is the gateway to five of these useful shortcuts

SHIFT+F10: Equivalent of right-click
SHIFT+DEL: Deletes immediately without removing to the Recycle Bin (!!!Careful)
SHIFT+TAB: Moves to previous control in the dialog box (TAB alone goes forward, SHIFT+TAB backward)
Press Shift when inserting a CD-ROM and you can skip auto-run
Pressing Shift while holding down CTRL and dragging to the desktop or to a folder creates an instant shortcut
(Of course you can do the same thing by clicking and holding
the right mouse button then release on the desktop and choose "create shortcut")
