INT.HOSPITAL ? JEREMY?S ROOM
Ripley sits in a chair next to Jeremy?s bed, a pair of reading glasses perched on her nose and notebook on her lap. There?s also a tape recorder sitting on the table. George, Christina and Alex sit in chairs around the room. Christina looks bored, Alex looks disbelieving. There is a computer sitting in front of Jeremy.
 RIPLEY
There are arguments for and against the Halstead-Reitan Battery. I like it because there?s less of a bias. It will tell us where the brain injury is, if there really is one and what treatments Jeremy?s going to need.
 GEORGE
And these tests can pick it up better than a machine.
 RIPLEY
That?s right. Now, Jeremy. This first test we?re going to do is a geometric picture test. The computer is going to show you an image and you have to decide whether it reminds you of the numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4.
 JEREMY
Okay.
 RIPLEY
There are 7 subtests and each has an underlying principle. If you get it right, it chimes, if not it buzzes.
 CHRISTINA
So why are we doing this test?
 RIPLEY
We?re doing it to determine if there is in fact brain damage.
INT.HOSPITAL ? SCRUB ROOM
Meredith pulls off her face mask and gloves and tosses them into the garbage can while Derek takes off his glasses.
 DEREK
So, if Ripley is a Neuropsychologist, why doesn?t she perform tests on your mom?
 MEREDITH
Simple, she?s too close to the situation. She couldn?t treat me because we?ve known each other since college, and she probably shouldn?t have treated you, because she disliked you because of me?
 DEREK
Really, I never knew that.
 MEREDITH
She was being a good friend. But she?s warmed up to you. Since Kat.
Meredith turns around to let Derek untie her scrub gown.
 DEREK
She could probably find out more than the tests that your mom has been going through.
 MEREDITH
Maybe, but she won?t. She?s too close. She knows what I went through with my mom. She?s being smart because she would have a biased opinion and she knows it.
INT.HOSPITAL ? JEREMY?S ROOM
The computer has been taken away. Jeremy wears a blindfold and there is a form board and wooden blocks in front of him. Ripley still sits in her chair, but her glasses are perched on her head. She rolls her neck to loosen the tension from bending over and scribbling on her notepad.
 RIPLEY
Now, for this exercise, Jeremy, you?re going to fit the wooden blocks into the form board with your dominant hand. We?re going to do this exercise three times. The first time with your dominant hand, then second with your other hand, then the third time with both hands.
 CHRISTINA
Now this test?
 RIPLEY
Determines sensory ability, memory of shapes, spatial location, memory functions and the brains function to transfer information between hemispheres.
INT.HOSPITAL ? HALLWAY OUTSIDE TWIN?S ROOM
Izzy stands outside looking at the twins through a window. They?re laughing, talking and generally looking happy with life. Bailey walks over to Izzy.
 BAILEY
 Shouldn?t you be in there?
 IZZY
Yes. But they won?t tell us who?s who.
 BAILEY
Did you look at their charts?
 IZZY
They said they may or may not have switched them.
 BAILEY
Parents?
 IZZY
Nowhere to be seen.
  BAILEY
You?re in a pickle.
 IZZY
Tell me about it.
Izzy takes a deep breath and sighs.
 BAILEY
So, what are you going to do about it?
 IZZY
I?m going to go in there and reason with them.
 BAILEY
Good luck.
 IZZY
Thanks.
Izzy squares up her shoulders and enters the room.
 TWIN #1
 Oh great, not again.
 TWIN #2
No surgeries today. We already told you that.
 IZZY
 But your parents-
 TWIN #1
You haven?t seen them yet, now have you?
Izzy sighs and sits down on the edge of the bed.
 IZZY
I know you guys are scared of the surgery. But? Now having the surgery is way scarier than having it. With the surgery one of you will have a much better chance of living than if you don?t have the surgery. As scary as it maybe, can you imagine living without one of you?
 LACEY
She?s right, ya know. Although, I?m not sure you?re scared. I think it?s more like you?re acting out for your parents nonexistent ways.
 TWIN #1
What would you know about that?
 LACEY
More than you might think. My mom was a lawyer, my dad a hotshot surgeon. Neither was ever home, unless I was acting out.
 TWIN #2
Did it?Ever get better?
 LACEY
I wish I could say yes. But? I became more understanding of their ways. Or maybe just used to their indifference.
 TWIN #1
I?mJena.
 TWIN #2
I?m obviously Lindsay.
 IZZY
Good. We?ll get you guys prepped and ready for surgery.
Izzy smiles warmly at Lacey, who lets the corners of her lips quirk up for a millisecond before she scowls back.
INT.HOSPITAL ? JEREMY?S ROOM
Derek and Meredith enter the room. Ripley scribbles on a note pad.
 RIPLEY
Okay. We?re going to take a break and give Jeremy some time to himself.
 CHRISTINA
Lunch?
 ALEX
I?m starving.
 DEREK
Dr. Buffet, how are the tests coming?
 RIPLEY
Good. Good.
Ripley nods her head towards the hallway. Ripley leads way out of the room. Derek closes the door so that Jeremy can?t hear.
 RIPLEY
I think there?s more brain damage than we anticipated. We?ve only done two tests and it?s taken him the maximum time for each. And the first test, he missed a lot more than he should have.
 DEREK
Why isn?t it showing up on the machines?
 RIPLEY
I don?t know. I think I?m going to need more time to do tests. The first two took a lot out of him. I want to do one more test today, but we?re going to have to wait to do the other tests until tomorrow.
 DEREK
Do you think I should just go in-
 RIPLEY
I don?t know. Wait until I have more of an idea tomorrow.
 DEREK
Ok.
 RIPLEY
Ok?
 DEREK
Ok. You?re the expert on these tests.
  RIPLEY
Ok then
