That?s the Way It Is ? Jo Dee Messina
INT. MEREDITH?S HOUSE ? MEREDITH?S ROOM
Derek lays on the bed next to Meredith. He props his head up with his hand. Meredith snores next to him. Meredith startles herself awake.
 MEREDITH
 What are you doing?
 DEREK
 Just watching you sleep.
 MEREDITH (V.O)
Intimate relationships. They come in all shapes and sizes. They?re not just between a boyfriend and a girlfriend but between friends and family members, too.
 MEREDITH
 Again?
 MEREDITH(V.O.)
We cherish them. Love them. Hate them. Most importantly, though, we need them to survive. It?s part of our DNA to need other people.
 DEREK
I like to watch you sleep.
 MEREDITH
 Uh huh.
 MEREDITH (V.O.)
One thing we don?t always know how to do is deal with conflict in these intimate relationships. Especially when our friends are our roommates.
Christina comes barging into the room and jumps on the bed.
 MEREDITH
 What are you doing?
 CHRISTINA
I need to talk to you.
 MEREDITH
 Now?
 CHRISTINA
 Now.
Ripley comes running into the room and also jumps onto the bed.
 MEREDITH
 What are you doing here?
 RIPLEY
I heard Christina come in, so I figured you guys weren?t naked.
Izzy comes into the room and jumps onto the bed, too.
 DEREK
Ok. I?m out of here. Too many girls in this bed.
 IZZY
This is every guys wet dream.
 MEREDITH
What are you doing in here Izzy?
 IZZY
I heard Ripley and Christina come in for super secret best friend time.
Derek shakes his head and gets off the bed and bounds downstairs for some breakfast.
 MEREDITH
 You two. Out.
 RIPLEY
 Meeeeeer.
 MEREDITH
 Out out out.
Izzy and Ripley grumble, but get up off the bed and head downstairs.
Meredith and Christina sit on the bed.
 CHRISTINA
 I miss him?
 MEREDITH
 Burke?
 CHIRSTINA
Who else? He hasn?t even come to find out where I?ve been for the past month.
 MEREDITH
Did you tell him where you were going?
 CHRISTINA
No.
 MEREDITH
Maybe he thought that you needed some time away. You aren?t the easiest person to get to know.
 CHRISTINA
I know. But he knows that. And he hasn?t come to find me.
 MEREDITH
He?s made all of the first moves. Maybe it?s your turn.
 CHRISTINA
Turn? We?re not taking turns. I don?t need him.
 MEREDITH
You?re stubborn.
 CHRISTINA
You?re a know it all.
 MEREDITH
You?re that, too.
 CHRISTINA
I know.
INT. MEREDITH?S HOUSE - KITCHEN
 IZZY
I never get to be apart of their super secret best friend time.
 RIPLEY
You?re cranky.
 IZZY
Lack of sleep makes me cranky.
 RIPLEY
Lack of sleep?
 IZZY
Yeah. Damnit. You guys go at it like freaking bunnies. You and George on one side and Mer and Der on the other. Hey their names rhyme.
 RIPLEY
Honey, you need more sleep.
Ripley and Izzy enter the kitchen to find Derek eating a bowl of Muesli by himself.
 DEREK
I can?t get away from you two.
 IZZY
 Mer kicked us out.
 DEREK
 She kicked you out.
Ripley walks over to the cabinets and pulls out a box of special K.
 RIPLEY
Super secret best friend time. Look at me. I?m a surgeon. I have problems that a psychologist doesn?t understand.
Ripley also gets out a bowl and a spoon. She sits down at the table next to Derek.
 IZZY
Now you sound cranky.
Izzy walks over to the refrigerator and pulls out a big blueberry muffin.
 RIPLEY
Lack of sleep and being kicked out of anywhere before 5 in the morning makes me cranky.
 IZZY
You think it?s about Burke?
Ripley pours cereal into her bowl. Ripley picks up the milk carton that Derek had left out and pours some into her cereal bowl.
 RIPLEY
What else would it be about?
 IZZY
What do you think is going to happen?
 RIPLEY
Honestly, there?s a theory.
 DEREK
Isn?t there always?
Izzy and Derek eat their breakfast as Ripley talks.
 RIPLEY
Anyway. It depends on three things. According to this theory. The outcomes in the relationship, the comparison level of past relationships, and what you could get from alternative people outside of the relationship.
 IZZY
OK.
 RIPLEY
As long as the perceived outcomes you get from the relationship are higher than the comparison level and the alternative level, then they?ll stay together. Of course there?s always the investment theory.
 DEREK
And that one?
 RIPLEY
It?s where you don?t want to abandon the relationship because the amount of time that you invest in a relationship. It?s when people stay together because they?ve been together for so long.
 DEREK
That would have been me and Addison.
 RIPLEY
Exactly.
George stumbles into the room and Ripley begins eating her breakfast.
 GEORGE
 Morning.
 RIPLEY
 Morning sweetie.
 GEORGE
Christina still here? I feel like we?re hotel. We should start charging people.
 RIPLEY
Not as much fun. This way you?ll never know who will end up on your couch.
 GEORGE
Christina?s been here for a month.
 IZZY
She hogs the bathroom. It takes time to make this gorgeous.
Izzy waves her hands in front of her face.
 GEORGE
 She leaves her clothes everywhere.
Ripley and Derek look at each other, then pointedly look back down at their breakfasts.
 IZZY
Not you guys though. You guys are great.
  GEORGE
No. You guys clean up after yourselves.
Meredith and Christina enter the kitchen. Izzy clears her throat and stands up to throw some garbage away.
 IZZY
 I?m taking a shower.
 RIPLEY
I?m out guys. I need to take a shower and get ready at my place.
 MEREDITH
Why don?t you just bring your stuff here?
 RIPLEY
Because. There?s two bathrooms, one for you and one for everyone else. There?s no time.
 GEORGE
Mind if I go with you? I need a shower and stuff to.
 RIPLEY
What time do you have to be at the hospital?
 GEORGE
Not til 7.
 RIPLEY
Ya. Come on.
 DEREK
I?m gonna take my leave. See you at the hospital.
Derek stands up and puts his dishes in the sink and kisses Meredith?s cheek.
 MEREDITH
 You don?t have to leave.
 DEREK
I do if I want to make my surgery on time. Ripley is right. There?s just not enough bathrooms here for everyone to get to the hospital on time when everyone has to be there at the same time.
