INT.HOSPITAL ? NURSE?S STATION
Lacy fumes while she does post op notes. Jason drops a binder on the desk.
 LACY
I hate that Dr. Model. Look at me. ?I?ve got blonde hair and big boobs. Oh, and by the way I?m a human sponge when it comes to information.?
 JASON
You?re not making it any easier on yourself. If Dr. Johnson hears you, you?ll be doing post op notes for life. Besides, I?m sure she studies just like everyone else.
  LACY
I?m a better pediatric intern than she could ever be.
 JASON
Then prove it Lacy.
 NURSE
Are you talking about the one that cut the LVAD wire?
 LACY
Dr. Isobel ?call me Izzy? Stevens?
 NURSE
That would be her.
 LACY
SHE was the one that cut the LVAD wire?
 NURSE
Do I need to say it again.
 LACY
Ooooh. This is great. Just fabulous.
 JASON
Lacy. Leave it alone.
 LACY
No, she embarrassed me in front of Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Johnson. That prissy little blonde is going down. It is so on right now. It?s not even funny how on it is.
Lacy gathers the charts that she was working on and starts walking away continuing her rambling.
 NURSE
That girl scares me.
 JASON
Tell me about it. You don?t have to work with her everyday.
Izzy walks past Lacy who is still rambling and up to the nurse?s station.
 IZZY
 What?s up with her?
 JASON
 She?s always like that.
 IZZY
Interesting. Hey Debbie, can I have the chart for 2811? I want to check on her before I leave.
 NURSE
No problem, Dr. Stevens.
The nurse hands over the chart that Izzy asked for and begins to walk away. Jason is on her heels.
 JASON
Hey, you were really nice to the nurse back there.
 IZZY
It doesn?t help to piss off the nurses.
 JASON
I?m glad you transferred programs. Lacy?s nice, but she?s a little loopy. And Bill has his own things.
 IZZY
Thanks. I can?t say that I?m glad that I switched yet. But I?m getting there.
Izzy smiles at Jason, then walks into the patient?s room.
INT. JOE?S BAR
Christina, Meredith, Izzy, George, Derek and Ripley sit at the bar each with a drink in front of them, Meredith with two shots of tequila in front of her.
 IZZY
So, I?m back to square one with these interns. All they do is call me Dr. Model. Well, except for Jason. He seems nice.
 RIPLEY
Kick their asses.
 MEREDITH
Violence doesn?t solve everything, Rip.
 RIPLEY
I?m all bark and no bite. Seriously.
 GEORGE
I beg to differ about that.
 MEREDITH
Ew.
 CHRISTINA
Hurt them. Fight the power.
 GEORGE
Just study and be on top of things. You?ll prove a point.
The singer of the band takes the stage.
 SINGER
Hey guys. It?s good to be here tonight. I hope you guys like it.
The band begins to play. Ripley turns to look at the band with narrowed eyes. Ripley then turns to look at Meredith.
 RIPLEY
 Meredith.
Meredith downs a shot of Tequila.
 MEREDITH
Yes Ripley?
 RIPLEY
Did you at least ask if this band was any good?
Meredith downs another shot of Tequila.
 MEREDITH
What? They sound ok.
Ripley turns and faces the band. She cups her hands over her mouth.
 RIPLEY
Booo! Sing in tune.
 MEREDITH
This is why I bring her to places like this.
 RIPLEY
HEY DRUMMER! FIND THE BEAT! YOU COULDN?T BEAT YOUR WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG!
Ripley begins throwing peanut shells at the stage.
 CHRISTINA
She?s an angry person. I like her.
 MEREDITH
Only when people don?t play in time and in tune.
 RIPLEY
HEY GUITAR PLAYER. PLAY THE RIGHT FREAKIN? NOTES. (pause) How hard is it to move the capo to a different fret for a new key? Come on now.
 DEREK
Does she always heckle the band?
 MEREDITH
Most of the time. She?s a musician. She?s bitter because she spent four years of her life totally focused on playing clarinet, sight singing, playing piano and any other instrument you can name.
Meredith pauses long enough to down another drink.
 MEREDITH
She demands greatness from everyone around her. We were in the same dorm my first two years of college and she pretty much dragged me through my first two years. Even though she says she couldn?t hang with performers, she could. She wasn?t the best when she got there, but she was the one that practiced six hours a day until she was. Can you blame her after she worked so hard?
 DEREK
Not really, no.
 MEREDITH
We need to talk.
 DEREK
We do.
 MEREDITH
But not here.
 DEREK
No. Not here.
 MEREDITH
I?m not taking my pants off until we talk.
 DEREK
We?ll see about that.
 MEREDITH
Don?t even tell me to be flexible and take things on faith.
 DEREK
Mer?
 MEREDITH
You gave up that right when Addison showed up.
 DEREK
Maybe we should talk here.
 MEREDITH
Derek?
 DEREK
Mer, it?s loud and no one is paying attention to us. Everyone?s too busy staring at Ripley.
Meredith and Derek watch Ripley for a moment.
 RIPLEY
HEY SINGER! LEARN THE FREAKIN? WORDS! How hard is it to say consonants?? OOOoooeeeeoooo.
Ripley mimics the singer, leaving out the consonants of words.
 GEORGE
Joe?s going to ask you to leave.
 RIPLEY
Wouldn?t be the first time that I was kicked out of a bar for heckling a band.
 MEREDITH
 Point taken.
 DEREK
 So?
 MEREDITH
When you picked Addison, I was hurt.
 DEREK
 Mer, we?ve been through this.
 MEREDITH
No, listen. Ok? Ok. So, it hurt. Derek, we need to be honest with each other. Completely and totally honest with each other. Because Derek. I love you. And I want us to work. Really work, because there?s a small possibility that maybe you?re?
 DEREK
Now it?s my turn.
 MEREDITH
But-
 DEREK
No buts. Now listen. I?m sorry for everything with Addison. Everything. That doesn?t make it right, but I?m only human. That being said? Before Christmas this year, I came to Joe?s. With Addison. And I told her something I now realize I should have told you. You weren?t a fling. It wasn?t revenge. I fell in love with you.
 MEREDITH
You told Addison that?
 DEREK
Yes. We should have separated then. But we didn?t because we were trying. I was trying to be the good guy, but really ended up hurting everyone involved, including you, who I never ever wanted to hurt. But I had to try. So, I?m sorry. For everything that I?ve done to hurt you.
 MEREDITH
I?m sorry, too. For George. And Finn. And the guy whose penis I broke.
 DEREK
I?d forgotten about him.
 MEREDITH
It?s hard to forget someone when you break their penis.
Meredith laughs and smiles.
 MEREDITH
 So.
 DEREK
 So?
 MEREDITH
 What are we now?
 DEREK
 Hi, I?m Derek.
Derek sticks his hand out for Meredith to shake.
 MEREDITH
 Meredith.
 DEREK
I?m head of neurology at Seattle Grace. And I?m recently divorced.
 MEREDITH
I don?t know, Derek. I?m an intern. It?s against the rules.
 DEREK
It?s okay. I like breaking the rules. Living on the edge.
Meredith laughs.
 RIPLEY
HEY SINGER! LEARN TO SING HARMONY! WHAT PITCH WERE YOU LOOKING FOR?? CAUSE YOU DIDN?T FIND IT!!
Ripley shrugs and takes a sip of her chocolate and coffee martini. Izzy takes a look at Ripley?s milky brown drink.
 IZZY
 What are you drinking, Ripley?
 RIPLEY
Chocolate martini with a shot of Starbuck?s creamy liqueur in it. Want some?
Ripley pushes the glass over to Izzy. Izzy takes a sip.
 IZZY
 This is good.
Izzy passes the drink to Meredith, who takes a sip.
 IZZY
Hey Joe, I?ll take what Ripley?s drinking.
 MEREDITH
Not my cup of tea. I like my alcohol straight. No frills.
 RIPLEY
That?s the Meredith I know and love right there. I?m sorry guys. I can?t handle this. I?m going home.
 GEORGE
Want a ride?
 RILPEY
From you? Any time.
Ripley smiles suggestively. She waves good-bye as George puts his arm around her and they leave.
 IZZY
 Seriously cute couple.
 MEREDITH
 Seriously.
INT. BURKETINA?S APARTMENT
Christina listens at the door for a moment to see if anyone is awake. When all she hears is her own breathing, she quietly opens the door and tip toes to the spare bedroom that she has been sleeping in. She hears heavy breathing in there and light filters from the window to show Preston fast asleep. She smiles to herself. Christina closes the door and yanks her clothes off, then pulls on sweatpants and a tank top and crawls in bed with Preston. She snuggles up to him. Preston stirs and slips an arm around Christina.
 PRESTON
 I?ve missed you.
 CHRISTINA
 I?ve missed you, too.
 PRESTON
Why don?t you get along with my mother?
 CHRISTINA
I don?t deal well with my mother. You remember the crazy lady that wanted me to bring you home?
 PRESTON
I liked her. She has good taste in men.
 CHRISTINA
Your mom is going to freak if she finds us sleeping like this.
 PRESTON
My mom does not freak.
  CHRISTINA
Your mom put me in a time out.
 PRESTON
What?
 CHRISTINA
There was a party at Mer?s a few nights ago, when I said that I was on call. Long story short, I was on TV and she found out. She gave me a time out to ?think about what I?ve done.?
 PRESTON
Can?t you try to get along?
 CHRISTINA
I?ve tried. Nothing I do is good enough for that woman. And I don?t deal well with people.
 PRESTON
You?re going to be a doctor. Part of the job is bedside manner.
 CHRISTINA
My one true weak spot.
 PRESTON
Practice on my mom.
 MEREDITH (V.O.)
Yes, some parents still try to make us feel better. But really, they end up complicating things, blurring the lines between what they want and what you really need. Especially when they want to believe they are still the only ones who can comfort you, but sometimes they can?t. Sometimes there?s only one person who can, but it?s hard for some parents to let go.
