INT. NURSING HOME
Meredith sits by the fireplace, waiting for her mother. Ellis walks over with one of the nurses, Agnes, and sits down.
 ELLIS
 Thank you, Agnes.
 AGNES
 No problem, Ellis.
 MEREDITH
 Hi mom.
Ellis turns to look to see who Meredith is talking to. Meredith grabs her mom?s hand.
 MEREDITH
 Mom, it?s me. It?s Meredith.
 ELLIS
Oh. Yes. Meredith. I think I have a daughter named Meredith.
 MEREDITH
It?s me, mom.
 ELLIS
No, no.She?s younger than you. Much younger.
 MEREDITH
I?m an intern at Seattle Grace.
 ELLIS
That?s where I did my internship. (pause and smiles) There were a lot of long hours.
 MEREDITH
Yeah. It?s hard.
 ELLIS
It shouldn?t be easy.
 MEREDITH
They?re enforcing these stupid rules now. The interns can only work so many hours before they send you home.
 ELLIS
That?s crap. That?s ridiculous. More hours meant more surgeries. More experience. Who?s the chief of surgery now?
 MEREDITH
Richard Webber.
 ELLIS
Richard? Can?t be Richard. Who do you think you?re trying to pull one over on? I?m tired of these cartoons. I have work to do.
Ellis stands up angrily and walks away.
 MEREDITH
Bye mom. It was nice talking to you.
Meredith tearily gets up and brushes a hand against her cheek.
INT.HOSPITAL - CHIEF?S OFFICE
Richard sits behind his desk doing paper work. Izzy walks in.
  IZZY
Hey chief. You wanted to see me?
 RICHARD
Yes, Stevens. How?s your first day as a Pediatric intern going?
 IZZY
All right. I guess. I like working with the patients. I?ve always liked kids.
 RICHARD
That?s great Stevens.
 IZZY
I really feel like I?ve found my niche?
 RICHARD
But?
 IZZY
No buts sir.
 RICHARD
Izzy?
 IZZY
Chief, it?s nothing that I can?t take care of. I just have a lot to prove. For my modeling background and for cutting the LVAD wire. That?s all.
 RICHARD
Izzy, everyone makes mistakes. Your internship is about learning from those mistakes.
 IZZY
But sir, when we make mistakes patients die.
 RICHARD
Yes, Izzy. That?s why we have Residents and Attendings keeping a close watch on the interns.
  IZZY
And that will go double for me, right?
 RICHARD
Until you prove otherwise, yes. But that?s why you?re coming here, too.
 IZZY
Yes, chief. Can I go now, sir?
 RICHARD
Go ahead Stevens. I have more paperwork to do. Set up a specific time with my secretary for us to meet every week, okay?
 IZZY
Yes, sir.
Izzy leaves the room. Richard sits there for a moment before he picks up his jacket and hat and leaves the room.
INT. NURSING HOME
Richard sits in a chair with a cup of tea. Ellis sits next to him.
 ELLIS
The strangest thing happened today, Richard.
 RICHARD
 What was that, Ellis?
 ELLIS
This girl came in and said that you were the chief of surgery at Seattle Grace. She also kept saying that she was my daughter.
Richard chokes a little bit on his tea.
 RICHARD
 Meredith knows about us, Ellis.
 ELLIS
Nonsense. She?s five. If Thatcher hasn?t caught on yet, than there?s no chance that a five year old could know.
 RICHARD
What if she does find out?
 ELLIS
She?s just a child. She?s not going to find out.
 RICHARD
But Ellis-
 ELLIS
I was thinking about the on call room last night. Seriously Richard. You can leave Adele. I?ll leave Thatcher. Just think how wonderful it would be.
 RICHARD
I?m-
 ELLIS
The fair is coming next week. Oh, Richard.Let?s go. But not on the merry-go-round. I don?t like merry-go-rounds.
Ellis gets a faraway distant look in her eyes.
 RICHARD
All right Ellis.
Richard pats Ellis?s hand as he remembers the last time they went to the fair.
BEGIN FLASH BACK
EXT. MERRY GO ROUND
They were on the merry-go-round when the thunder had begun.
 ELLIS
I left Thatcher. Did you leave Adele?
 RICHARD
 Ellis?
 ELLIS
It?s a simple yes or no question, Richard.
Rain begins to come down in sheets.
 RICHARD
No, Ellis. I?m staying with Adele. She?s my wife.
 ELLIS
But Richard. I left Thatcher.
 RICHARD
I can?t leave Adele. I?m sorry. I love her.
Ellis looks away from Richard.
 ELLIS
I?m leaving Richard. It?s all or nothing with me. I?m moving to Boston with Meredith.
 RICHARD
Ellis?
 ELLIS
No Richard. If you can?t leave your wife, than I can?t stay here and continue this charade. I?m better than that.
Ellis takes Richard?s face in both of her hands and kisses him on the lips. It?s a slow kiss, soft, gutrenching. Like they would never see each other again. Ellis gets off of the merry go round. She turns around.
 ELLIS
 I love you Richard.
 RICHARD
 I love you, Ellis.
Ellis turns and leaves Richard still standing on the Merry go round. People are huddled running around under jackets, trying to get out of the rain. Ellis looks up at the sky and embraces the rain, never looking back at Richard.
END FLASHBACK
INT. NURSING HOME
Richard shakes his head, ridding himself of the memory.
 RICHARD
Don?t worry. We?ll stay off of the merry go round.
 ELLIS
Thank you, Richard. You were always a sweetheart.
Richard pats Ellis hand, a very sad smile on his face.
INT.HOSPITAL - LOCKER ROOM
Meredith fishes through her locker, looking for her phone. George walks in.
 GEORGE
Hey, what are you doing back here?
 MEREDITH
I left my phone here. Somewhere. It?s in here somewhere. Five pictures of Derek with my underwear, but no cell phone in sight.
 GEORGE
Don?t you think it?s the slightest bit weird that he keeps leaving you pictures of your underwear.
 MEREDITH
Correction. Two pictures of underwear. One picture of him giving me puppy dog eyes and pouting, one of a bundle of red roses with him pouting and one with just a bundle of red roses and a sign that says ?I?m sorry?.
 GEORGE
And you guys are back together?
 MEREDITH
Yes? No? I don?t know. We haven?t talked about it.
 GEORGE
Don?t you think that you should?
 MEREDITH
You sound like Ripley.
George shrugs. Meredith continues rustling through her locker with her hand.
 GEORGE
It happens.
Meredith feels her phone and grasps it.
 MEREDITH
YES! Found it! I?m going to Joe?s. You goin??
 GEORGE
Yeah. I haven?t been there in forever.
 MEREDITH
See you there.
Meredith slams her locker and leaves the locker room. George pulls his scrub top off.
INT.HOSPITAL ? WAITING ROOM
Ripley yawns as she walks to the doors of the ER. She is wearing a black suit with a white satin tank top underneath and a pair of high heeled shoes. Meredith runs after her.
 MEREDITH
 Hey Rip.
Ripley turns around, when she speaks her voice is raspy.
 RIPLEY
 Hey Mer.
 MEREDITH
We?re going to Joe?s tonight. Wanna come?
 RIPLEY
I can?t. I feel like I?m going to pass out. I need sleep. I?ve been dragging all day.
 MEREDITH
I would have figured that you?d still be working on the love adrenaline.
Ripley turns her head to cough away from Meredith.
 RIPLEY
I?m all adrenalined out after that party. Nah, my CFS is catching up with me. I need sleep.
 MEREDITH
Party pooper. Come on. There?s supposed to be a new band playing there.
 RIPLEY
Mer?
 MEREDITH
Just for a little while. Hang out, then go home. George will probably be there?
 RIPLEY
All right, all right.
 MEREDITH
So, you and George?
 RIPLEY
Don?t ask me. We haven?t talked about it yet. We?re spending too much time doing OTHER extra curricular activities.
Ripley turns and leaves with Meredith, yawning the whole way.
