You?re getting to Be a Habit with me ? Diana Krall
INT.HOSPITAL ? RIPLEY?S OFFICE
Preston sits on the couch. Ripley sits in the chair across from him with a notepad and her tape recorder on the coffee table in between them.
 RIPLEY
Dr. Burke. How are you doing?
 PRESTON
All right. I?ve had a lot to deal with.
 RIPLEY
That?s why the chief suggested you come in to talk to me.
 PRESTON
Yes.
 RIPLEY
So tell me what happened.
 PRESTON
I was shot. Dr. Sheppard went in and took the bullet out.
 RILPEY
Was something affected?
 PRESTON
I have hand tremors, now. I don?t think I?ll be able to operate ever again.
 RIPLEY
Do you think that it could be a mental problem? That you are keeping yourself from operating again?
 PRESTON
Surgery is all I know.
 RIPLEY
Tell me about growing up.
 PRESTON
My mother owned a restaurant in Alabama. She?s here right now.
MEREDITH (V.O.)
When we were kids, our parents were there for us. They picked us up when we fell, they kissed away our tears.
 RIPLEY
Really?
 PRESTON
She and Christina aren?t getting along.
 MEREDITH (V.O)
They still try to fix everything, but really just end up making it worse.
 RIPLEY
And how does that make you feel?
INT.HOSPITAL ? LOCKER ROOM
Meredith ties her shoes, George slams the locker shut and Christina sits on the floor, staring off into space.
 MEREDITH
So, George? You didn?t come home last night.
 GEORGE
 Yeah? I stayed at Ripley?s.
 CHRISTINA
Malaina freakin? put me in a time out.
 MEREDITH
 Why?
 CHRISTINA
Because I stupidly talked to one of the newscasters the night of the shooting. She saw the interview on TV and knew I wasn?t on call.
Christina gets up from the floor and plops down next to Meredith.
 MEREDITH
So she gave you a time out?
 CHRISTINA
I had to go to bed and think about what I had done. That woman needs to leave.
 MEREDITH
How did you get George out?
 GEORGE
She started walking around naked. I thought Burke was going to kick my ass for seeing her naked.
George pulls his stethoscope around his neck.
 MEREDITH
Nice.
 CHRISTINA
Back to the basics? That?s not going to work with Malaina, though. She?d just make me go put some clothes on.
 MEREDITH
Have you talked to Dr. Burke?
 CHRISTINA
I?ve tried. He won?t listen. No, it has to be his idea that she go back.
Izzy sticks her head in and smiles.
 IZZY
 Hey guys.
 GEORGE
 What are you doing here?
 IZZY
 It?s my first day back.
 MEREDITH
  I?m happy for you, Iz.
 IZZY
I?ll see you guys later. My new resident is probably looking for me.
INT.HOSPITAL ? HALLWAY
Izzy sees a man over six feet, Dan Johnson, tap his foot impatiently while talking to Bailey.
 BAILEY
Stevens. This is your new resident. Get the lead out.
 JOHNSON
 Great. Dr. Model.
 IZZY
What did you just call me?
 BAILEY
That was not a good move Dr. Johnson. Not at all.
 IZZY
I am the only intern here that has ABSOLUTELY no debt.
Four other interns walk over to where the group stands. There?s one woman, Lacy Parker, and two men, Bill Howard, and Jason Barnett.
 JOHNSON
We had someone transfer to Peds. This Dr. Stevens.
 LACY
Great. Dr. Model. You know it?s hard enough being a woman and getting respect without the added bonus of someone modeling in the profession.
 BAILEY
Good luck, Stevens. You?re going to need it.
 IZZY
Great. Back to square one?
 JOHNSON
Stevens, you?ll be with Dr. Montgomery today.
INT.HOSPITAL ? PATIENT?S ROOM
Izzy walks into the room with the rest of the pediatric interns and Dr. Johnson. Addison talks to the parents, Cindy and John, about what?s wrong with their daughter, Marissa.
 ADDISON
Dr. Stevens. I?m surprised to see you here so soon.
 IZZY
I?m your intern for the day.
 ADDISON
Dr. Stevens, can you explain septicemia?
 IZZY
Septicemia is when there is a severe infection in the bloodstream which is caused by bacteria found in the bloodstream.
 ADDISON
Excellent Dr. Stevens. How would you diagnose?
 IZZY
Check heart rate, body temperature and number of breaths per minute. Also a blood test will need to be done for a white blood cell count.
 ADDISON
Good. How do we treat?
Lacy moves to answer, but Izzy answers without even thinking.
 IZZY
Mostly antibiotics, but surgery may be necessary to drain infected fluid collections, and fluid might need to be replaced and appropriate support for organ dysfunction may be needed.
 ADDISON
Excellent, Stevens. Welcome back to the game.
 IZZY
Thanks, Dr. Montgomery.
 ADDISON
Dr. Johnson, your interns need to take a page from Dr. Stevens book, she?s on top of things. She?s one of the best interns here. You?re lucky to have her.
Izzy gave the other interns a glowing smile.
 ADDISON
 Stevens, you?re scrubbing in.
 JOHNSON
This is her first day here.
 LACY
That?s not fair! We weren?t allowed to scrub in our first day.
 ADDISON
This is her first day as your intern. Stevens knows how I operate so she will be scrubbing in.
Meredith walks in.
 ADDISON
 Grey. You?re late.
 MEREDITH
Sorry, I had to check in with Bailey.
 ADDISON
 You?ll be scrubbing in, too.
 LACY
 She?s not even pediatrics.
 ADDISON
Dr. Johnson. You need to speak to your interns. I don?t take whiners onto my team.
 JOHNSON
Don?t worry Dr. Montgomery. I?ll speak with her.
The other pediatric interns leave the room and Lacy can be heard through the open door.
 LACY
 But it?s not fair!
  JOHNSON
Lacy. Get a grip. You?re making me look bad. It?s not a good idea to make your resident look bad. You?ll be doing post op notes for the rest of the day.
Meredith smiles at Izzy.
 MEREDITH
I see you made some new friends.
 ADDISON
Grey, go book an OR immediately. We need to get everything taken care of as soon as possible. Stevens, prep her for surgery.
 MEREDITH
Right away, Dr. Montgomery.
INT.HOSPITAL ? CAFETERIA
Izzy, George, Meredith and Christina sit around a table eating.
 IZZY
So the other Ped interns? Yeah, totally hate me.
 CHRISTINA
I did to when I first met you. Because I still don?t understand how you learned to do anything but walk around being naked.
 IZZY
This is more a deep seated ?now we have to learn stuff cause you actually know what you?re doing? kind of a hatred.
 MEREDITH
I?m sure it?s just cause you just transferred to their program.
Meredith elbows George, because he just sits there, staring.
 GEORGE
Yeah. It?ll pass.
 CHRISTINA
What?s got your panties in a bunch, bambi?
 MEREDITH
Ripley.
 GEORGE
She does not.
 IZZY
She totally does. When was the last time you spent the night at the house?
 GEORGE
I don?t have to answer that? Besides, I don?t know.
 MEREDITH
It?s 6 days.
 GEORGE
So?
 CHRISTINA
Aww? Everything is right with the world. Bambi?s in love.
Alex walks over to the table and puts his plate down. He sits down.
 ALEX
This is ridiculous. All I get to do is post op notes and run labs. I?m a freakin? doctor. Not a nurse.
 MEREDITH
Who did you piss off this time?
 IZZY
Try the chief.
 GEORGE
Who don?t you piss off?
 ALEX
Get over it, Bambi.
 CHRISTINA
What?d you do to piss off the chief?
 ALEX
Nothing.
 IZZY
Nothing. Nothing? Try the whole episode with Ripley. She refuses to take him as a patient.
 MEREDITH
The one the night that John showed up?
 ALEX
How was I supposed to know that she was weaker than Bambi? I didn?t think that was possible.
 IZZY
God, Alex. Would it hurt you to be nice to people? You?re such an ass.
Izzy gets up in a huff and walks away.
 ALEX
 Izzy.
Alex grumbles something, then picks up his plate and runs after Izzy.
 CHRISTINA
 So, Burke?s mom.
 MEREDITH
Have you thought about how you?re going to get rid of her?
 CHRISTINA
Not a clue. Do you think Ripley would help?
 GEORGE
Christina. That?s unethical.
 CHRISTINA
And dating you?
 GEORGE
I am no longer her patient.
George gets up and walks away.
 MEREDITH
We really know how to clear a table.
 CHRISTINA
I still don?t know what I?m going to do.
 MEREDITH
Maybe she?ll go away on her own.
 CHRISTINA
Maybe Burke will get horny and kick her out.
 MEREDITH
You could turn innocent things dirty around Burke.
 CHRISTINA
I?m better than this. I?m crafty. I lie. Why can?t I think of something better?
 MEREDITH
You?re just having an off day.
Christina gets up.
 CHRISTINA
I do not have off days.
Christina storms off.
 MEREDITH
 And then there was one.
Meredith gets up and throws her garbage out.
INT.HOSPITAL ? HALLWAY
Alex runs up and grabs Izzy?s hand, making her turn and look at him. Alex still holds his tray of food.
 ALEX
 Izzy.
 IZZY
 Alex. What do you want?
 ALEX
Look. I?m sorry about everything with Ripley, but I had to tell her the truth.
 IZZY
You and the truth. Sometimes the truth isn?t a good thing. Have you even looked into Ripley?s background? No wonder the chief is pissed at you. She is the top psychologist in the state, possibly the country. You insult her to her face and don?t even give her a real shot.
 ALEX
Hey, everyone has problems.
 IZZY
Some more than others.
Alex and Izzy glare at each other for a moment. Alex drops the tray of food, barely hearing it clang to floor when Izzy and Alex grab for each other and begin kissing.
Izzy all of a sudden pulls away and slaps him across the face.
 IZZY
 You?re such an ass.
Izzy storms off.
 ALEX (yells after Izzy)
So you want to meet at Joe?s later?
 IZZY
 Ass.
Izzy continues walking away but flips a finger behind her.
