 Miyazawa Yukino is a talented, intelligent, mature, and composed young lady... or so it seems. Ever since she was very young, she thrived on praise, and therefore worked her way to the top. But the Miyazawa that her classmates and teachers see is not the same Miyazawa who lounges around her house lazily wearing a sloppy sweatsuit. All her life, Miyazawa Yukino has worn a false identity in school. She managed her popularity skillfully, attracting admiration constantly. But at last, as a highschool freshman, she meets Arima Souichirou and decides to shed her mask of perfection. Miyazawa may really be lazy and greedy, but she is also genuinely intelligent and very crafty. Deceiving people for fifteen years is only more proof of that. She knows she fooled people, and is aware of the consequences of shedding her false identity. Therefore, she turns down Arima's help in the problem with her classmates and is determined to solve it herself. Being with Arima, she realized she had no real close friends before him. Her position at the top of the class had alienated her as a kind of idol. As she begins acting more like her real self, she begins to make friends.
 Arima Souichirou is a boy who hides his past in talent, intelligence, and good personality. He is an only child who lives with his aunt and uncle, who adopted him after he was abandoned by his real parents. Because his family scorned his parents, he tried hard all his life to prove that he would not turn out like them. Throughout school he was a model student to prove his worth. That is, until he met Miyazawa Yukino. At first, he blackmailed her to get her so he could spend time with her, under the guise of doing his schoolwork for him. But she touched a part of him that he had buried long ago, and he realized that being upright and being perfect were not all there was to life to gain peoples trust and love. He found himself following her lead more and more as he grew to know her real personality. Arima loves Miyazawa deeply, though their romance encounters numerous trials and tribulations.
 Asaba Hidaeki is a handsome boy who comes to Hokuei Prefuctural High School midway through the year. He does poorly in school, but is popular for his good looks. His life's goal is to be surrounded by women. Seeing that Arima was the most popular boy at the school, he figured to join forces with him and build his own "merryland" of girls. Therefore, with Miyazawa Yukino being Arima's girlfriend, Asaba ran into an obstacle. He insults Miyazawa and tries to separate her from Arima. However, he realizes that he can't, and becomes good friends with the both of them.
