An evening of solo piano and piano duet music by husband and wife duo

Wei-Han Su

Taiwanese pianist Wei-Han Su has appeared internationally in solo, duo and chamber recitals in major cities in the United States, England, Russia, Italy, Japan, and Taiwan. He has performed in such prestigious venues as the Purcell Room at the South Bank Centre, England, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and the Hall of Columns, Russia. In 1991, he made a highly successful orchestral debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, performing Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductor Sir Simon Rattle.

This past season Wei-Han Su gave over two dozen performances in the U.S., including guest artist appearance at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Arkansas, a recital at Peabody Conservatory, Maryland, and collaborative performances at the Clara Thompson Hall, Missouri. Highlights of this coming season include Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, a solo recital at Kent State University, Ohio, and a guest artist recital at the 14 th Walnut Hill Music Festival in Boston, Massachusetts.

The recipient of numerous awards and honours including the 1995 Ian Fleming Education Award and the 1996 Craxton Memorial Prize, Wei-Han Su received the Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors from Cambridge University, the Master of Music degree and the Performer's Diploma from the Royal College of Music and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Peabody Conservatory. While attending the Royal College of Music, he won the prestigious Chappell Gold Medal, the College's highest honor for pianists.

Dr. Su is currently on the piano faculty at Southwest Missouri State University in the U.S., having previously taught at the Peabody Conservatory. In addition to his active performing schedule, he frequently serves as clinician and adjudicator in piano festivals and competitions.

 

Hye-Jung Hong

Since giving her debut at the Palace of Arts in Seoul, Korea, Hye-Jung Hong has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in major cities of Germany, Korea, Holland, Italy and Canada. In the U.S., she has appeared with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Chrysler Hall, Virginia and the Springfield Symphony Orchestra in Hammons Hall, Missouri, and has given numerous solo and collaborative concerts in such venues as Havre de Grace Hall in Maryland and Hart Recital Hall in Michigan.

Ms. Hong has received critical praises for her artistry and musicianship in her solo performances. Her playing has been described as “full of energy and electricity that stimulates the Korean musical world.” ( Piano Eum-Ak ) In 1999, she was invited to present a series of solo recitals in Andernach, Venkaster-Kuse and Ramstein, Germany. The newspaper Die Rheinpfalz praised the “musicality, crystal clearness and elegance” of her performances.

A first-prize winner of many piano competitions, including the Han-Kuk-Il-Bo (Korean Daily Newspaper) Competition and the Wol-Gan Piano Competition, she has studied with internationally acclaimed musicians Julian Martin, Leon Fleisher, YongHee Moon and Dominique Weber. She was also invited to attend the Holland Music Festival, Orford Music Festival in Canada, and Venice Piano Festival where she studied with Boris Berman, John Perry and Marc Durand. Currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Peabody Conservatory, Ms. Hong is a Lecturer of Piano at Southwest Missouri State University.
