The Kota Kinabalu Music Society was set up in the 1970's with the aim of promoting an interest in serious and Classical music in schools and educational establishments and elsewhere. Today it mostly supports music education through its organization of regular concerts and workshops.

Membership is open to any adult who is interested in music, whether as a player themselves or as a listener. The membership fee is RM15 per year (renewable every January) and entitles the member to special "member-price" tickets at most of the concerts. The work of the Society committee is done by elected volunteers and currently consists of music teachers, businessmen, a school Principal and retirees.
