Hebrews 11 1-3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the
word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things
which do appear.
Is Faith a Blind leap, a crutch, a contradiction to logic? Read
Hebrews 11.

What is Faith with respect to God:
1. Accepting and acting on God's word as true
II Thessalonians 2:10b-12 They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie
and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
2. Personal surrender
John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
3. Change in conduct
II Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight:
James 2:17-26 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.
You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless [4]?
Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," [5] and he was called God's friend.
You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a
different direction?
As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law
of your God, I also will ignore your children.

What "dividends" does Faith yield?
Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
I Corinthians 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them,
because they are spiritually discerned.
Hebrews 11:6 - 8 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who
earnestly seek him.
By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became
heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was
going.
Hebrews 11:23 - 28 By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's
edict.
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time.
He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.
By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.
By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.
Hebrews 11:29 - 34 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.
By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days.
By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,
quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and
routed foreign armies.
1 Corinthians 2 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.
My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,
so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.
We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to
nothing.
No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" --
but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the
Spirit of God.
We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand
them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment:
"For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

What are the main ingredients of a "saving" faith?
1. Knowledge: Galatians 3:2 - 5 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?
Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?
Have you suffered so much for nothing--if it really was for nothing?
Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge:
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
II Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
II Peter 1:5 - 8 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
2. Assent: Acts 17:32 - 34 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, "We want to hear you again on this subject."
At that, Paul left the Council. A few men became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a
number of others.
3. Trust: John 3:14 - 18 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of
God's one and only Son.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not
on you own understanding. in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

How is faith received?
Luke 11:28
He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
Romans 10:14 - 17
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they
hear without someone preaching to them?
And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?"
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-10
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
not by works, so that no one can boast.
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

What is the relationship between reason and faith?
Application:
1. In what area of your life could you demonstrate more faith?
2. "The prayer of faith will save the sick man" What does this
mean?
James 5:13 - 16 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any
merry? let him sing psalms.
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church;
and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of
the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord
shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be
forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for
another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a
righteous man availeth much.
3. Is God obligated to "heal" if we pray in faith believing? If a
person is not healed, does this mean they do not have enough faith?
(Faith Healers).

From Romans:
4 through 5:8
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter?
If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about--but not before God.
What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." [1]
Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation.
However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.
David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
"Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him." [2]
Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham's faith was credited to him as
righteousness.
Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before!
And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of
all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.
And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had
before he was circumcised.
It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that
comes by faith.
For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless,
because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the
law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations." [3] He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed--the God who gives life to the
dead and calls things that are not as though they were.
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." [4]
Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb
was also dead.
Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,
being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness."
The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone,
but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
5:1-8 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope.
And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

More on FAITH:
II Corinthians 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
I Corinthians 1:18- 25 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." [1]
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.
[19 Isaiah 29:14 ]
I Peter 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto
salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
I Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the
just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee,
O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these
things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
I Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things
of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can
he know them , because they are spiritually discerned.
Hebrews 12: 1 - 2 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about
with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight,
and the sin which doth so easily beset us , and let us run with
patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the
author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set
before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down
at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that
endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be
wearied and faint in your minds.

Other Verse about Faith.
Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from
faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he
hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
James 2:18 - 20 Yea, a man may say, Thou has faith, and I have
works: shew me thy faith without the works, and I will shew thee my
faith. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the
devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man,
that faith without works is dead?
James 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by
works was faith made perfect?
Romans 3:30 - 31 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the
circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. Do we then
make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the
law.
Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace;
to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that
only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith.
Roman 4:18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might
become the father of many nations, according to that which was
spoken, So shall thy seed be.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works
of the law, but by the faith that it of Jesus Christ, even we have
believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of
Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law
shall no flesh be justified.
Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own
righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the
faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not
seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his
house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the
righteousness which is by faith.
Acts 3:16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this
man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him
hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Mark 2:5 (A few close Friends).
When Jesus saw their faith he said unto the sick of the palsy,
Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
Mark 4:39 - 41 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto
the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great
calm.
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye
have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another,
What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Mark 5:27 - 42 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press
behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but
his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her
blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of
that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue
had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who
touched my clothes? And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the
multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And he
looked round about to see her that had done this thing. But the
woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and
fell down before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto
her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be
whole of thy plague. While he yet spake, there came from the ruler
of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead:
why troublest thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard
the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue,
Be not afraid, only believe. And he suffered no man to follow him,
save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. And he cometh
to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult,
and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he
saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not
dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had
put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel,
and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was
lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her,
Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee,
arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of
the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great
astonishment.
