From the sermon on the mount we see who was listening.
This then is the exercise of faith. Or the response to God.
Chapter 7 finishes with:
29 for He was teaching them as {one} having authority, and not as their scribes.
Now he will prove that that authority is not a human authority but it is from God.

Matthew 8:1-4
The Man With Leprosy
1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him[c] and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man [d]. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured[b] of his leprosy.
[a] Matthew 8:2 The Greek word lepra
While this word was used for various diseases affecting the skin, and not necessarily leprosy, the definition of the word is vile and does not include minor skin problems like acne. It is serious. A spiritual view may be seen in Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
[b] Matthew 8:3 Greek katharizo made clean : to make clean, cleanse
This word has a physical, religious and moral sense. And I like the idea of including all those nuances here.
  • a) from physical stains and dirt
    1. utensils, food
    2. a leper, to cleanse by curing
    3. to remove by cleansing
  • b) in a moral sense
    1. to free from defilement of sin and from faults
    2. to purify from wickedness
    3. to free from guilt of sin, to purify
    4. to consecrate by cleansing or purifying
    5. to consecrate, dedicate
  • c) to pronounce clean in a levitical sense
[c] He 'came and knelt'.
From Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The action of faith is first of all to recognize our need and come to Jesus. In the previous chapter, Jesus tells us in verse 7 to "Ask, Seek and Knock" and he then connects the requests to a promise in verse 8 of "For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened" The greatest desire of our heart may be simple or complex. It never hurts to ask Jesus about anything and everything.
[d] Jesus touched the man. "I am willing".
What was required by the law? (Leviticus 13:45) :
"The person with such an infectious disease must wear torn clothes, let his hair be unkempt, [ Or clothes, uncover his head ] cover the lower part of his face and cry out, "Unclean! Unclean!"
The man was never to be touched by another person in this condition. Jesus demonstrates in the next example of healing and in several other places that his touch is not required for the physical healing process. Jesus seeing into the man's heart knew he needed the touch of another person first. It was the the power of his human touch of compassion that came before his power as God. Jesus heals more than just our bodies. He is most interested in the healing of our souls. He is willing. See Luke 10:25-37 : The Parable of the Good Samaritan
After receiving the gift, the man receives a command. Not a new command but to observe the command that has already been given.
Matthew 8:4
4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded[e], as a testimony to them.[f]"
[e] "Go show yourself to the priest". Leviticus 14:1-32
  • Verses 1 through 6 of Leviticus 14 tells of the "ceremonial cleansing" through the substitutionary death of a like kind. Two doves are given to the priest. One is killed and the blood covers the other. One dies the other goes free.
  • In Verse 5 of Leviticus 14 we see the phrase: over fresh water in a clay pot.
    • The use of the clay pot in the New Testament is found in John 2 where we have the wedding at Cana.
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."
The water changing into wine miracle is agreed to be the first miracle of our Lord. Jesus is asked by his mother to do something that seemed trivial at the time. Yet Jesus takes advantage of the moment and points to his death on the cross with the phrase "My time has not yet come.". He then goes about the task of using the "ceremony" to teach a lesson.
In the preparation of the water jars, Jesus identifies his actions with the ceremony in Leviticus 14. The imagery of the water into wine is about his death and can be supported in the communion supper where Jesus identifies the wine with his blood. "The master of the banquet" is then the priest who is the religious "master of the banquet" who is to be presented with the elements of the ceremony. The other imagery given in Leviticus 14 of the "cedar wood" is the cross, the "scarlet yarn and hyssop be brought for the one to be cleansed" are for holiness "the process of sanctification". Not of ourselves, it is the gift of God.
  • Verse 6 : He is then to take the live bird and dip it, together with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, into the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. 7 Seven times, ("the number of completeness"), he shall sprinkle the one to be cleansed of the infectious disease and pronounce him clean. Then he is to release the live bird in the open fields.
  • Verse 8 "The person to be cleansed must wash his clothes, shave off all his hair and bathe with water; then he will be ceremonially clean. Still an outward cleansing and shaving that would show the "newness of life" that the healing had given.
  • The ceremony continues with a waiting period of 8 days, the same time period between birth and circumcision. Then a measure of the man's ability or wealth is used in the requirement for the blood sacrifice (dove or lamb). Quite a number of the offerings are in this chapter. (The burnt offering, sin offering, guilt offering, wave offering, grain offering) are the big hitters. One that is missing is the fellowship offering. However all of this is done to restore the fellowship the leper would have had with his family friends and people. The offering is not missing as much as it is the goal.
  • The ceremony concludes with this action.
    • Verse 14: The priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.
    • This is recorded in "Exodus 29: 20" and "Leviticus 8" under the heading of "Consecration of the Priests"
Exodus 29: 20 Slaughter it, take some of its blood and put it on the lobes of the right ears of Aaron and his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Then sprinkle blood against the altar on all sides.
In this ceremony of blood we are to listen with a blood tipped ear. To do our works of service by the power of God and to walk in the newness of life on the path of sacrifice.
The priest is the official position of priest but all Israel were known as a kingdom of priests.
This "other" ordination is not from a family relationship of a priest hood but the result of the action of God's healing through faith. "A gift of God".
  • Note: that the man is not officially or ceremonially clean until this is done. Once the ceremony is done, the person is completely free and restored to the community.
The ceremony itself does not convey any healing. The man was completely clean at the feat and feet of Jesus. However it is an act of obedience.
Question : Is this a parallel to the act of water baptism?
    Matthew 3:13-16
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

    Romans 6:4
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
That new life is a "born again" life where we become children of God.
[f] as a testimony : Just speculation:
I believe the priest needed to go and look up what to do in the event of a healing leprosy. The chances of a true case of leprosy just going away are quite slim. The priest would not have had a waiting line. The word testimony here is the word "marturion". The root of this word is martyr (also witness).

The relationship with God is to come to him and ask of him through prayer. Then respond through the demonstration of obedience and thanksgiving.
Demonstrate your salvation to others through obedience to God.

Gentiles: Matthew 8:5-13
The Faith of the Centurion
5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him."

8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished [a] and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." [b] And his servant was healed at that very hour.
Faith is what the Lord is after. Trust in him. The Centurion comes as the Man With Leprosy had done.
  • Verse 5: He comes to ASK.
  • Verse 8: He comes "poor in spirit" in that he states "I am not worthy"
  • Verse 8: He comes in faith "just say the word"
  • Verse 10: [a] "he was astonished". Not surprised, this Greek word is "thaumazo". I choose that Jesus held the Centurion in "admiration".
    • 1) to wonder, wonder at, marvel
    • 2) to be wondered at, to be held in admiration
[a] A difference here is that there was no need for Jesus touch the servant. Jesus demonstrates the power of God is beyond the body. Another difference is that the centurion was not asking for himself but for another. The centurion had compassion on his servant. Not a family member at all but someone he cared for. When we care for others and ask God for his intervention and see the work of God then the Glory goes to God. Psalm 107:19-22
19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.

20 He sent forth his word and healed them;
he rescued them from the grave.

21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for men.

22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings
and tell of his works with songs of joy.

All must come by faith.
Verses 10-12 plainly says that we come by faith. God does not have grandchildren. Each of us stands or falls by our relationship with him. Not as a matter of our people but our faith in him.

Matthew 8:14-17
Jesus Heals Many
14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
Verses 14 and 15 are quite special. They are of how Jesus will heal in private. No crowds no deep spiritual truth or teaching. With no fanfare No additional command pointing to the Law. Just a healing. Yet with a wonderful response. "She got up and served". God's work in our life on a daily basis enables us to server him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
Isaiah 53:4
"He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."[c]
Here is more; The ultimate healing. Start in 52:13 when you read.:
3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he took up our infirmities
and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
smitten by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Matthew 8:18-22
The Cost of Following Jesus
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." [a]

21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
[a] Daniel 7 :13
13 "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
The king of the universe has no status here and that is just the way he planed it.
Philippians 2:5-8
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death
even death on a cross!
Matthew 8:23-27
Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
Tests of faith come in many forms. Jesus here starts to bring the story of Jonah to our mind. Sleeping on the boat with no fear of the weather. For he knows who controls the weather.... He does.
I am so glad to see the disciples show "little faith" when he was physically with them. He knows our frailties and loves us still. He will grow our faith as we grow in the grace and knowledge of him.
He is also leading them toward an ever increasing knowledge of who he is. In the previous verses, he associates himself with the "son of man" of Daniel 7 a title of diety. Now he demonstrates his power over nature to prove the claim. He is more than a teacher more than a healer.

Matthew 8:28-34
The Healing of Two Demon-possessed Men
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[d] two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."

32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
We started with Unclean and we end with Unclean.
Having displayed his power in healing as a fulfillment of scripture and in the control of the wind and the waves of nature, Jesus now demonstrates he is supremacy over demons. This power was briefly mentioned in verse 16 but here is something that had become a fact of life.
They pleaded with him to leave their region.
Don't rock that boat.
I have never understood their position on this. "Gad" is one of the tribes of Israel. They were to be under the Mosaic law of clean and unclean animals. Yet they were pig herders. They just did not want Jesus. This is their family history. They did not want the blessing of crossing over the Jordan to the promised land. Just to settle for what they saw as good. Not what was best. Many are like that today.
How about you? Choose Jesus today. Cross over to his side of the river.
