Commandment 1
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 "You shall have no other gods before (or besides) me.
You know something? That includes you. You are not God.
Genesis 3:1-4
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
God is superior to all. There are no other gods more powerful than he. There is none like him.
Is 45:20-24
"Gather yourselves and come; Draw near together, you fugitives of the nations; They have no knowledge, Who carry about their wooden idol And pray to a god who cannot save.
"Declare and set forth {your case;} Indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me.
"Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other.
"I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear {allegiance.}
"They will say of Me, 'Only in the LORD are righteousness and strength.' Men will come to Him, And all who were angry at Him will be put to shame.
- That God said that he is number 1
- How does that work out in our lives.
- How did the persons in the Bible respond.
Do we understand who the Lord is? The God noted in Isaiah 45 is a God that I want to follow.
That we do not follow him may be that we do not know the God of scripture.
Most of the encounters I have had with godless people who put together a statement of "how can you believe in a God who ..."
And indeed, the god they paint is not a god I want to follow either.
Jesus addresses the atheist. The person who plays games with the word.
Matthew 22:23-33
23That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
24Teacher, they said, Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him.
25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.
26The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh.
27Finally, the woman died.
28Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?
29Jesus replied, You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
30At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
31But about the resurrection of the deadhave you not read what God said to you,
32I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob[a]? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.
33When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
Jesus addresses the religious person.
Note that Jesus here identifies that ALL Scripture is common in that the laws, rules and regulations are all based on Love.
They are not based on the ability of men and women to follow. Or a progression to enlightenment of being.
But rather the emotional link of Love for one another.
First for God who helps us with the people in our lives who need to see the expression of Love.
Matthew 22:34-40
34Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
35One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
36Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?
37Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.[b]
38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.[c]
40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
Then Jesus gets to the point of it all with these religious men.
Who Is the Christ?
Matthew 22:41-45
41While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42What do you think about the Christ[d]? Whose son is he?
The son of David, they replied.
43He said to them, How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him Lord? For he says, 44 The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies
under your feet. [e] 45If then David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?
The 2 commands referenced by Jesus are:
Deuteronomy 6:5
5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Leviticus 19:18
18 " 'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD .
These are masterfully placed in scripture.
Deuteronomy 5 is a repeat of the 10 commandments as is Leviticus 19.
What is this Love. Paul identifies this as "not me" but rather it is Imitating Christ's Humility .
Philippians 2:1-5
1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being likeminded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
It is our refusal to put others first that keeps God from 1st place in our lives.
"Who Me???" and other responses to God through scripture.
Sub titled "If God is in charge then why ..."
How does God work in the world today? If he is in charge, then why do bad things occur.
Or why do good things occur?
Can we trust in God.
How do we react to the clear teachings found within the Bible?
The events of our lives give us the opportunity to do what is right and good or not.
Through it all, God demonstrates his justice and loving kindness (kheh'-sed) toward us.
If we understand the nature of God, then we do what he tells us because we know it is for our good.
Not to keep us from having a good time, but that our life can be free from the fetters of sin.
Not to make ourselves righteous but to be Salt and Light in this world.
What about obedience, If the Lord is not Lord of all, he is not Lord at all.
How about these folks.
- Noah, build an Ark.
- Abram, get up and go.
- Jacob, wrestling with God.
- Moses, who am I.
- Joshua, be strong and of good courage.
- Gideon, how will I know and the fleece.
- Job, Why do bad things happen to good people.
- Zechariah, how will this be.
- "here I am". - Abraham, Samuel, David, Mary -- Jesus.

Noah lived in a time not unlike some places today. He was called out and he saved the world through obediance.
Genesis 6:9-22
9 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.
...
13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress [3] wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.
...
22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
Abram lived in a world of idols. God called and Abraham was the father of nations.
Genesis 12
1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.
...
4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him;...
Jacob was not living his life according to a purpose. God needed to chase him back to the land.
Genesis 32:23-25
23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
In Hebrews 11:24 --
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
Now Moses was living a quiet life out of trouble. Then God called.
Exodus 3: 9-12
9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt."
11 But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?"
12 And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you [1] will worship God on this mountain."
Joshua was in the shadows of a great man. But now God called him to lead.
Note the "be attitudes".
Joshua 1: 5-9
No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
Gideon was in hiding. God comes with encouragement.
Judges 6:7
7 When the Israelites cried to the LORD because of Midian, 8 he sent them a prophet, who said, "This is what the LORD , the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 9 I snatched you from the power of Egypt and from the hand of all your oppressors. I drove them from before you and gave you their land. 10 I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.' But you have not listened to me."
11 The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."
but
15 "But Lord , [1] " Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."
16 The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together."
17 Gideon replied, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. 18 Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you."
And the LORD said, "I will wait until you return."
19 Gideon went in, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah [2] of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.
20 The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And Gideon did so. 21 With the tip of the staff that was in his hand, the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the LORD disappeared. 22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD , he exclaimed, "Ah, Sovereign LORD ! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!"
23 But the LORD said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die."
24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Samuel
1 Samuel 15:22
But Samuel replied:
"Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
Job (read 38 through 39) God states his credentials in his power in nature.
Job 38
Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said:
2 "Who is this that darkens my counsel
with words without knowledge?
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
4 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?
Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said:
16 "Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death [2] ?
Job responds.
Job 42
1 Then Job replied to the LORD :
2 "I know that you can do all things;
no plan of yours can be thwarted.
3 You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?'
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 "You said, 'Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.'
5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes."
Zechariah
Luke 1:5-20
5In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. 7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.
8Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. 14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.[2] 16Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. 17And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
18Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."
19The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time."
Mary
Luke 1:26-38
26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."
34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"
35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[3] the Son of God. 36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month.
37For nothing is impossible with God."
38"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.
