Under orders of Adjutant General Samuel Cooper, the long awaited mass transfer
of Union prisoners begins from Camp Sumter (Andersonville) to Charleston and
Florence, South Carolina, and Savannah and Millen, Georgia, reducing the inmate
population at Andersonville from 33,000 to 5,000 by October.
(2)"Camp Florence Confederate Prison was open for five months from September
1864 to February 1865."
