Mahamudra is the state of Enlightenment for Vajrayana. In other words, Mahamudra is the state of Prajna Paramita which attained the highest wisdom.
Practioners of Kagyu Lineage has a necessity to recite the "Prayer to Dorje Chang" every day. The sentences is short but the meaning is profound including all the essence for enlightenment of Mahamudra.
Dorje means unchanging and not be able to ruin. Chang means holder. To Practice Mahamudra , first we should bow down the nature of the unchanging of Dorje Chang.
Dorje Chang is represent as the Dharmakaya. Contains the characteristic of the Five Dhyani Buddhas and all Buddhas. Dorje Chang is the essence of all the department of Vajrayana, the root of the Kagyu Lineage.
while reciting the "Prayer to Dorje Chang" We should visualize“ the refuge tree”or“ Dorje Chang and Lineage Guru” at the sky in front of us . We respect them and pray for gaining the blessing from them. Through the blessing of Lineage, we should able to achieve the Enlightenment .
There are two types of Kagyu Lineage. Long Lineage and short Lineage. For the short Lineage, in order to transmit the Vajrayana teaching, Dorje Chang form the basis of the Kagyu Lineage and appeared to Maha Siddhi Tilopa. After Tilopa have received the teaching directly from Dorje Chang, he was transmitted the teaching to Naropa.
After Marpa having receive the teaching from Naropa and other Maha Siddhi (Long Lineage), then transmitted the teaching to Milarepa who was then attained the enlightenment of Mahamudra. After received the teaching from Milarepa, Gampopa then transmitted the teaching to The First Karmapa. Karmapa who established "Karma Kagyu" and the reincarnations system. The present Karmapa is the Seventeenth reincarnations.
