The Two Sons
A beautiful illustration of Salvation
By Rev. Ken Brooks
Luke 15
11) And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12) And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13) And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14) And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15) And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16) And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17) And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18) I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
19) And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
20) And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21) And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22) But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23) And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
24) For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
25) Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.
26) And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
27) And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28 )And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
29) And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30) But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
31) And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
The word says that a certain man had two sons which made him a father. Our heavenly father created both Jew and Gentile equally. This father represents God the father. Notice, that the younger son asked for his goods and the father divided unto them his goods. Notice, that it says that he divided unto them both his living.
God has offered and given unto both Jew and Gentile opportunity that they may have life and have it more abundantly.
That is the reason that Jesus came and died on the cross because it was for whosoever will. In under the law christ was married to the jewish nation because they were Gods choosen people. We are married to our spouse by a covenant of the law and there is nothing that can separate us from that covenant. For what God joins together let not man put assunder.
Once again christ was married by the covenant of the law, but the jewish nation had corrupted God's laws and wrote out their own laws and that is the reason that Christ had to come and die that he maybe free from that covenant of the law.Even moses said that God would choose another people that would cause the Jewish nation to become jealous.
Notice that verse 13 says that this younger son took a journey into a far country and wasted his goods. We all have done this when we came to the years that we new good from evil or when we become accountable, we went into a far country. We were alienated and separated from God the father because os sin.
Yes, the words that Christ spoke called them sons but do remember that before we came accountable we were as God's son because we were innocent of our sins but as it said in the beginning that man has became as us to know good from evil and lest he put forth his hand ,and take also of the tree of life, and eat and live forever.
Please remember this verse, because we may get back to it. This man wasted his goods and so did we when we were lost and out in that far country.
We were wasting our life in this condition while we wasted ever minute that we where not seeking the lord. And when he had spent all, there arose a famine in that land.
Before that we ever can be saved by Gods grace there has to arise a famine in our lifes. We have to see our unfit condition that we are in and when there is a famine there will be hunger and also thirst.
Notice that he went and joined himself with a citizen of that country and he sent him to feed the swine.
The swine is one of the most unclean creatures that there is and when satan had us in this condition we were just as unclean as those swine were.He was to feed the swine! In other words he was a servant of this man in this far country.
We were a servant of the devil when we were alienated in that far country from God. This man was destitute and was very hungry and it said that he would have eaten of the husk that the swine did eat. Notice, that it said he would have but he did not eat of the swines husk. Think about this, it was unclean food and what did satan offer you when you were lost?
If you had eaten of his falsehood and deception and died in that condition hell would have been your home.It said that no man gave unto him. There is no man that can save you or fill you of that hunger and thirst.
The only one that can do this for us is Christ. Peter said there is no name in under heaven by which man can be saved but by the name of Jesus.
Then it said when he came to himself he remembered how many hired servants of his father had bread enough and to spare and he said " I perish with hunger" .Gods servants have plenty and there is enough for all or whosoever will to come to the father and eat.
Remember the verse I asked you to remember that man has to put forth his hand and eat. God expects us to make an effort to find the that tree of life and eat from it. This man said I will arise and go to my father and will say unto him I have sinned against haeven and before thee. You see, this man was confessing that he was a sinner and that he had sinned against God.
He arose and begin to make that effort that God expects of us. He was repenting and sorry for his sins. He said he wasn't worthy to be called a son and we were not worthy either when we were in that far country. He wanted to just be made a hired servant for him.You see, he wanted to work for God the father.
Notice that he arose and came to his father but he did not make it all the way. Because it says that when he was a great way off his father saw him. Our heavenly father saw us and not only saw us but heard us crying out in repentance of our sins.
God will have compassion for a person that truely repents and come to him.He didnt make it all the way back because the father met him.
We have to confess our sins to him and we cannot be like the pharisees which were self righteous and thought they were so much better than the Gentile nation.they considered the Gentiles as dogs and looked down upon them. Then the father said to his servants to bring the best robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and put shoes on his feet and bring the fatted calf and kill it and let us eat drink and be merry.
Notice, that he told his servants to do these things.Who were these servants? Who is it that does the saving and the dressing?.Is not this our lord and savior Jesus Christ? .I can see these servants as Jesus and also as the Holy spirit.
Christ dresses our soul with his robe of rigtheousness through the ministering power of the holy spirit. These servants which is the lord Jesus and the holy spirit is the only ones that can do this for us.
He was the servant of God and came to do his will and so did the holy spirit. They put a ring on his hand showing forth the eternal everlasting love of God. In marriage that is what the groom does when he puts a ring on his bride's hand and marriage is supposed to be life long and that bond is never to be broken .
Look at the eternal love that christ has for his bride. Now he put shoes on his feet. In savation our feet were shod with the preparation of the gospel. We with out salvation can not walk with God.
Also without shoes it is very hard to walk upon the thorns and the thistles of this world and with those shoes we can trample upon the heads of serpents and scorpions .He said bring the fatted calf. There had to be a death and a sacrifice before that we could eat.
Jesus said you have to eat of my flesh and drink of my blood. Gods table is very bountiful and there is room for all.
We have heard men before bring this out as a backslider, but, we want you to notice that this man never had that robe and that ring and those shoes before. Also, he had never had eaten of the fatted calf . For this my son was dead and is now alive again.
When we were in that far country we were dead in our sins and trespasses. He was lost and now is found, and they began to be merry.
When we were saved there was great joy that came to us and was in us. We became a new creature in christ. There was no longer a famine in our lives but we were made full of the grace of God and of Christ.
There was no longer any hunger in our souls when God found us. And they begin to be merry. Not only was there joy in us but there was rejoicing in the church and also there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
Part two is below on the elder son.may God bless you and I hope you have enjoyed todays lesson.
The Two sons:Part two
27 )And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28) And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
Notice that Jesus calls this man that stayed at home the elder son. As we said in part one that the Jew was God's chosen people in under the law and in the grace plan the Gentiles were grafted in.
But the Jewish nation had disobeyed Gods laws and his commandments and wrote them out laws and traditions of their own. Look what our world has done today, they are calling good evil and they are calling evil good.
The Jewish nation as a whole has stayed at home in under the law because the law and the prophets was shadows and figures pointing to Christ. There has been a remnant of Jews saved but mostly, in general the Jewish nation has rejected Christ and are still looking for the messiah to come and set upon the ivory throne of David and make the rest of the world pay tribute to the Jews In the word of God even one prophet called the nation of the Jewish people a bunch of backsliden heifers. Also this elder son was in the field and in one of Jesus parables he said that the field was the world.
The word of God says that we are in the world but we are not of the world. This elder son drew nigh to the house and heard music and dancing. What he was hearing was the rejoicing over this one sinner man that had repented of his sins and had recieved salvation.
The music that he heard was giving honor and glory to God for saving this lost man. The dancing was Gods people rejoicing in the spirit of the lord. The elder son called one of the lords servants and asked him what this meant and the servant told him what these things meant and he became angry.
As we said in part one that moses said that God would choose him another people and provoke them to jealousy and also anger.
If this elder son had a been a child of God he would have rejoiced with them and would have been happy that God our father saved another lost sinner but he didnt.
As the word says that Jesus came unto his own and his own rejected him. Look what this elder son did,he became angry and jealous because of Christ saving the Gentiles also.
We read in the word in places that when Christ went into the houses of publicans and sinners that the pharisees became angry and sought to kill him. When the lord saved zacchaeus the pharisees or Jews said that Christ has gone to be a guest with a sinner. That is the reason that Jesus came was to seek and to save that which was lost but a great part of the Jewish nation rejected him. After he became angry the father came out and intreated him. Other words, he was inviting him in a very earnest way.
God loved him but he would not repent and go in.Notice that the elder son said that he served him and had never transgressed I at any time thy commandments.
If that were so then this elder son would have been a perfect man. But this elder son was a selfrighteous man and thought of himself better that the Gentile. He said that he had served him these many years but he had stayed at home in under the law and we know that the law could not give life.
There was no mercy in under the law but grace thru Jesus there was mercy. He said to his father that he had never gave him him the kid that he could make merry with his friends.
He had never recieved it because he had never repented of his sins but said that he had never broke one of the fathers commandments.
Once again he was selfrighteous just as the pharisee was in the parable of the pharisee and the publican in luke chapter 18 verses 9 thru 14.The pharisee looked down on the publican and thought that he was so much better than the publican was.
The elder son was the same way as the pharisee was in the parable of the pharisee and the publican. The father said to the elder son that it was meet that he should make merry and be glad. But the elder son was just the opposite. He was angry and jealous. All that the father had he offered to whosoever will but as a whole the Jewish nation would not receive the son of God.
I hope you have got a blessing from this Daily bread and may god bless you all.
Do you find yourself today in a far country, separated from God? If you do, Remember that the father is standing with outstretched arms waiting for you. Yes, He still loves you , so much that he sent his son to die on the cross for you. Seek his mercy today just as this younger son did.
