| At the age of 18 Terry lost his right leg to cancer. His dream of running a cross-country marathon to raise money and awareness began the night before his surgery. It took three years for his dream to become a reality. On April 12 1980, on a cold and wet morning in St. John's Newfoundland, Terry dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean, and began the Marathon of Hope. Terry ran 3,339 miles, until he was forced to stop his run in Thunder Bay Ontario. His cancer had returned. Although he never finished his marathon, Terry succeeded in raising millions of dollars for cancer research. He also touched many hearts along the way and continues to do so even now. He raised our awareness of a dreaded disease that no one wanted to talk about. Terry gave hope where there was none, and courage where there was only fear. Twenty years ago Terry Fox ran through my home town, I will never forget that day. |
