Uncommon Heroes continued...
Return to Kelly's Homepage...
This project actually began during World War II when my husband's aunt Rhoda  began keeping a scrapbook. She collected everything she could find about our local area (and sometimes beyond), especially articles about the "boys" who went off to war.
When she passed away in 1982, her son passed those treasured scrapbooks on to me. For years they were kept tucked away in a closet until someone "interested" came to visit. In 1999, while showing them to a friend, I realized that the photo's were beginning to fade, that's when my daughter Andrea  suggested that I create a web site, so with her help.....I picked up where Aunt Rhodie left off.
During the past few years I've been able to add to her scrapbooks, not just with the help of the internet, but with alot of  support and encouragement from the veterans and their families.
I have met some of the greatest people I will ever know; Harvey Burns, Bob Lawson and the late Bill MacKenzie, to mention just a few. But I am also aware that I will never know their comrades; Irvin Ray, Burnham Boutilier, William Davies, and all the others who never came home.
I believe these people deserve to be remembered  as individuals, young men and women who gave everything they had , so that we could have the freedom we enjoy today, freedom that we all too often take for granted. How aften have you heard someone refer to an entertainer or athlete as their hero?
The real heroes are the ones found within this web site. They sacrificed their lives  in the hope that our children would never have to.
I hope that what Aunt Rhodie and I have done will ensure that these great people and the sacrifices they made, will  never be forgotten.
                                   These are MY heroes!

I believe that heroes are the people who do what has to be done, when it needs to be done

In May of 2001, Diana Tibert and I began research on a book about our Guysborough County veterans...what seemed like a simple project , has become a time consuming amount of work, but one we take great pride in!
