Book Club Response: Chapters 4, 5, and 6

What do you see that might be engaging to many different students?

Providing a language rich environment would meet the needs of all the students. This would support their oral language development as well as assisting in developing reading skills.
Teaching students strategies to use to assist them in decoding or finding the meaning of words and word recognition processes. Making vocabulary instruction fun and more hands on by providing games and puzzles support the needs of many students.

What do you see that might meet more than one learning modality?

Singing rhymes and reading rhyming books would meet the need of more than one learning modality. These activities would be engaging to the visual, auditory, and musical learners.
The use of graphic organizers will meet the needs of more than on learning modality.

What do you see that might support/hinder students with special needs?

Blending and segmenting games would support students with special needs. These activities would show them how sounds relate to specific letters as they segment and blend words.
Computer activities, such as the Internet would support special needs children.
Pairing with other students also would support the needs of special needs children.
 Modeling activities.

What do you see that might support/hinder English Language Learners?

Making words activities would be a good activity to use with ELLs. Just as the blending and segmenting activities would support special needs students, these activities would help ELLs recognize the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. They would be able to learn to differentiate how the English alphabet sounds different from the sounds in their native languages.
Buddy and paired reading activities support the learning of ELLs.
Use of word walls and environmental print is supportive of ELLs.
Modeling activities is supportive of ELLs.

What do you see that might be bias in the language used in the assignments discussed in the chapter?

I didnt see any bias in any of the activities mentioned. I think the activities will support all learners.

What do you wonder about with respect to equity in regard to what youve read in the chapters?

I wonder about the use of phonics instruction. I am a big believer of students learning to use phonics as part of reading instruction. Do you think that the use of phonics in the classroom is equitable to the use of other strategies? What about the use of games and puzzles? What role has vocabulary instruction that in your classroom?
