| Menchi and I both agree, there is absolutely no disputing Samurai Deeper Kyo's greatness. This amazing anime, fresh from Japan (so fresh you can almost still smell the sake), is a one of a kind. Many have speculated that it is just a reproduction of Ruroni Kenshin...to them I say this: Samurai Deeper Kyo makes Kenshin look like a festering pile of vomit. ^_^ The story begins many, many centuries ago during the battle of Sekigahara where we are first introduced to Onime No Kyo (Demon Eyes Kyo). He is the killer of a thousand men, the man with no heart (some believe no soul), and the main character of our lovely story. He stands in the middle of a giant pile of bodies spread out before him like a Christmas dinner, most killed by his hand. The first episode focuses on the decisive battle between Kyo and a man named Kyoshiro. After many words are exchanged between the two, disaster stikes as swords clash...the two samurai are hit by an on-coming meteor. Bear with me people! I know this sounds a little...umm...unrealistic, but hey...you tell me how fake it sounds when your hit by one. The next few episodes go as follows: we are introduced to a young man carrying a medicine box on his back. Caring for the wounded and ill, he's traveled across the land. In a particular part of said land, he meets a young woman in distress. He helps her to a small shack off the road to care for her. As it turns out, she has faked illness in order to get him alone with her unique three-barreled gun, for she is a bounty huntress. Yuya, as we later learn is her name, attempts to explain herself to him as he dangles from a nearby tree which she placed him under for safe keeping. Her plans of turning the young man, who turns out to be none other than Mibu Kyoshiro, are spoiled by the enterance of a large and rather unseemly monster. Two men show up not long afterwards, one a young boy and the other, and the other the famous general Yukimura. Upon their arrival, a sword is passed to Kyoshiro (who up until this point was completely unerved and just a mess in general) who has now become calm and seems to have some sort of quiet confidence about himself. His eyes are now blood red...hellllllllllo Onime no Kyo. As it turns out, ever since the iccident at Sekigahara, Kyo and Kyoshiro's souls have been trapped within one body. Each is not able to show himself while the other is present, leaving one always shoved in the back of their mind. Saske (the young boy), Yukimura, and a few others have been following Kyoshiro ever since, perhaps knowing something everyone else doesn't? The story follows the group as the travel together and grow in size, eventually adding another member known as Benitora. Once a member of a gang, Benitora joins up with Kyo and Yuya mostly out of sheer boredom. He serves as some of the main comic relief as he blunders along in search of himself and aimlessly persuses Yuya. Each episode, more of each character's past is reveal, each growing in depth. This is one of the best things about this series, it feels almost as if you are growing along with them. No series would be complete without some kind of opposition and this one is no exception. Faced with all kinds of monsters, demons and shades from the past, our band or warriors (and not-so-warrior types) are faced with some of the greatest challenges of their lives. By the end of the show, you'll be wondering where half of the little bastards came from. The end of this show lives you in no way disapointed, except in the fact that there wasn't more to me enjoyed. All secrets are unlocked, the world is saved, and yet their is still an air of mystery surrounding the last episode. Don't understand what I mean? WATCH IT!! This series is sooooo versitile, it has everything you could possibly desire in anime: action, humor, romance, mystery, a little bit of fantasy, and over-all cool bloodyness! If you never watch another anime in your life, for god sakes, watch this one...I was almost left in tears at the end...kind of like when you finish a good piece of cake...except SDK is low in fat. so sit back, watch, enjoy, and love. Till next time! -_^ |
