The colonist of America wanted separation from the old countries because that’s why most of them to America for. Colonist came from many different places in Europe, such as Germany, France, England, and Sweden. Colonist left the countries because they wanted something new, better living and starting over, which didn’t come quick. Through hard work they would separate from Europe. Marcus Whiffen says; in British America the period of 1700-1776 so many times as much building in the seventeenth century did, and architecture went under a fundamental change. At the opening of this period the form and appearance of buildings were determined by that complex of practices and predilections transmitted from one generation to the next by personal example and word of mouth, which we call tradition; by its end tradition led to taste. Taste is the beginning of a person using their mind on their style.
Changing the style in which architects looked at buildings and wanting to become a part of something new. The American Revolution started to change the minds of the colonist to go against the king’s wishes for them to pay more taxes for thing they are not receiving. With the aggression going on this brought greater separation from Europe. During this time period architecture started to change to a common use which wasn’t as complex as the European architecture. “The European style of architecture was still respected as you can tell by looking at some of America’s larger cities and the capitol builds have some similarities to Europe’s now”(Norton 11). Along with style and separation from Europe there were many different climate conditions that played a role in the transformation of American Architecture.
We all know that in the United States has many different climate and weather regions. Some of the regions we have are warm/ wet, cold / wet, and hot/ dry. In different areas calls for different types of architecture, like, in Minnesota their frost line would be a lot higher then one in North Carolina. A frost line is the depth that water in the soil will freeze, so you would know how deep of a foundation need to construct that home or building. John Blumenton renterates that saying in New England they build there home to coincide with their resources of living. Differences in climate wasn’t the only difference the colonist didn’t all have the same belief and teaching system.
In these opposite cultures there were Germans, Swedish, French,
and English. Each group inhabited a separate section of the colonies at
this time. The Swedish had the southeast the,Germans had the mid west,
the eastern coast belonged to the English and the western coast was the
French. As time went on the groups started to mingle with each other, dust
making an Eclectic society.
An eclectic society is a society that takes little parts of sometimes
to make a unique whole unit. The society that was created also caused the
same to happen with architecture were the four different nationalities
combined to form one. The trend seems to make what ever was build many
times stronger. At this stage American Architecture has been created.
When the colonist arrived to this continent they didn’t know that
they would affect the world of architecture. Following this slow and hard
trend the form know as American Architecture. During this brief time in
history a few thousand people would change the course of a widely know
art.
