Nice 3' small right Sat Sept 15th at Pipes My Recent Surfing Experiences Just had a couple of session on the shortbard. It has been very enjoyable and can relate alot of the Windsurfing waveboard (powerred on a 4.5) sensations to that of the smaller surfboard. Initiating a carving jibe is very similiar to that of a front side bottom turn. Right ON! Surfing 2001 Been in the water about 72 days now this season. I have only got out skate sailing once this summer. I had a great time and introduced this crazy sport to a Wisconsin boy that I work closely with. We shared the parking lot with a Kite board sailor......watch out dude!. I have the major windsurfing itch and am really eager to get out on the BEE, though as always there is really no wind in San Diego and I have really a 'Gorge setup'. The gear is in the garage eh! If San Diego had no waves I would be a Spazz! We got Janet a 9' modern shaped tri-fin longboard which has been great for her and myself on those sub 2' days. We have been spending more time togethor at the reef break in Cardiff by the Sea and I am so impressed with Janets progress. I plan on putting myself on a 7' transitional shortboard this winter and am really looking forward to learning some new slashy manouvers. The frontside bottom turn is the latest and coolest skill I am getting really comfortable with on the 7'6" Yater Funboard. This sensation resembles good jibing on the sailboard. I'll have some cool photos of us surfing in North County San Diego that I will try to get up online when possible. Jackson is getting used to beeing at the beach all the time and loves to crawl all over the boards and eat sand.
Surfing and Windsurfing in San Diego Windsurfing is my favorite sport. I always thought that skiing was the greatest and that there was nothing that could surpass the sensation of skiing with deep pow on a good steep slope. The first time I hooked in the harness and got both feet in the straps and ripped across the Coumbia River Gorge I said to myself",..hey that is the wildest #@!%#$ sensation ever, what a crazy thing I just did...Wow!" I was hooked forever! Since the family relocated to San Diego I have only had the chance to sail a pathetic 2 times in Mission Bay on a good 5.8.day. Last year I logged the fewest days sailing since I started, yikes! Though I am not severly stressed about this, I do get a serious itch every now and then and I will not get any work done in the office when any sign of a storm comes from the SW. I have come to the conclusion that a diehard windsurfer can survive with no winds if there are waves around. Surfing is a great substitute for having a no wind. (San Diego is cursed with 72 degrees F and calm conditions about 350 days of the year). I started bodyboarding as soon as I moved to Southern California and now I surf a 7'6'' mid length glass board designed by Yater. I plan on getting a 7' shortboard later this winter season and a 9'6'' longboard nose rider for Cardiff Reef next summer. Thus I am going to be fully equiped with a nice Surf board quiver for the great variet of breaks San Diego has to offer. Janet is planning to take a course at Cardiff like myself and a few of the guys did this last fall with the San Diego Surfing Academy. I continue to spend all my spare time at the beach and dedicate a couple days out of the week to work on my surfing skills. Sold the bikes, sold the skis, never the windsurfing gear, so surf it up......Wicked Garden! ..Hey plan on playing Hockey again this year eh and perhaps get back into Martial Arts!..Right ON! |
