Making art is a lifelong process. Each new piece is built upon the previous one. The focus of my work draws from a culmination of life experiences. Being somewhat biographical and personal, my artwork often depicts children, family and my faith. Portraiture, the figure, and the use of juxtaposition in collage can be seen throughout my work. I am drawn to portraiture and the human figure because of their power. The face (especially the eyes) and body gestures speak volumes. We see faces everyday, yet very rarely do we really �look� at or �read� them because life is so fast paced.Portraitures allow you to stop, look and read the face and the depth within the eyes. I am drawn to collage because of the patterning aspects. Patterns remind me of life. Up close they may appear to be complete chaos, but when you step back and view the overall picture there is a definite order.
Whether in painting, printmaking, or sculpture, I am involved in the physical process and the technical aspects of design. I am more comfortable when I plan, plan, and re-plan. But I have found that sometimes my best work is that which is unplanned, those little accidents that turn out to be great works of art. The challenge is to constantly move forward, take the necessary risks, and experiment with new techniques.
The aim of my artwork is to speak to the heart of the viewer in order to establish a common ground. Inevitably the experience of the viewer is different from mine and from each other�s. They are to make their own connections to and interpretations of a work based on their own lives. I want who I am and what I have experienced to come through in my artwork. In other words to tell a story. My story.
