Quand Tu Danses
Jean Jacques Goldman
En Passant (1996)
J'ai fait la liste de ce qu'on ne sera plus
Quand tu danses, quand tu danses
Mais que deviennent les amoureux perdus
Quand tu danses, y songes-tu?
I made a list of things we'll no longer be
When you dance, when you dance
But what becomes of lost lovers?
When you dance, do you wonder about it?
Amis non, ni amants, trangers non plus
Quand tu danses, quand tu danses
Mais quel aprs, aprs s'tre appartenus?
Quand tu danses, y songes-tu?
Not friends, not lovers, strangers no longer
When you dance, when you dance
But what after, after having belonged to each other?
When you dance, do you think of it?
Je crois bien que j'aurai besoin de te voir
Quand tu danses, quand tu danses
Sans te parler, ne dranger, mais te voir
Quand tu danses, y songes-tu
I really think that I need to see you
When you dance, when you dance
Without speaking to you, nor upsetting you - but to see you
When you dance, do you think of it?
Et toutes les peines, toutes, contre une seule de nos minutes
Mais n'tre plus rien aprs tant, c'est pas juste
Quand tu danse, y songes-tu?
And all the pain, all, against even one of our minutes
But to no longer be anything after so much, it's not fair
When you dance, do you wonder about it?
Et j'ai fait la liste de ce qu'on ne sera plus
Mais que deviennent les amours perdues
Quand tu danses, y songes-tu?
And I made a list, of what we will no longer be
But what becomes of the desperate loves?
When you dance, do you think of this?

This is by far, my favorite song on En Passant.  Despite the raw simplicity of the music, hiding some great lyrical complexity. There is a lonely ness and a desperation that exits in the lyrics that is supported by the lonely and almost akward playing that JJ creates on the guitar as he sings.JJG does one thing, lyrically that is beautiful.  He plays with the sounds of 'amourseperdues"  The first, "lost lovers", the second "desperate loves".  Subtle differences in emphais of pronouncation makes an intreuging play for the lyrics.
