George Humphreys enlisted in the Army in Ireland 12 November 1847 and travelled to Australia with the 58th Regiment as a guard on board the Pestonjee Bomanjee - a ship transporting convicts to Australia.  The ship sailed from Deptford on 10 August 1848 for Dublin,  leaving there on 20 September 1848 and arriving in Sydney on 19 January 1849.   Nearly three weeks later, on 7 February 1849, the Regiment sailed on the Louisa from Sydney, arriving in Auckland, New Zealand on 6 March 1849.   George was discharged from the 58th Regiment in New Zealand on 30 September  1858.

George returned to Windsor, NSW, Australia some  time after his discharge - while there he met Harriet Ann Frances Reeds and  married her in the Scots Presbyterian Church, Windsor on 1 July 1864.   Harriet was a minor at the time and her mother, Harriet Oram, was required  to give her consent to the marriage.  George was considerably older at about 46 years of age at the time of marriage.

George and Harriet returned to New Zealand and settled near Whangarei,   New Zealand, raising four children, three sons and a daughter.     Sadly  George had ill health for many years and died in Auckland   only  18 years later  in 1882, leaving Harriet with a very young   family to bring up.   More bad luck was to follow though  - daughter  Anne  died in 1891 aged 26 and eight  years later son  Charles  George died aged 30.  George, Harriet, Anne and   Charles George are buried in a family grave in the Symonds Street cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.

George and Harriet's son Frederick William settled in Whangarei, New Zealand and raised a large family.  Henry John settled in Auckland,  New Zealand and had two sons and a daughter.
