Louisa GRIMWOOD b 02.06.1877 Plumstead, Kent, England d 02.02.1971 Hamilton, New Zealand m (1) William Edwin WEBB m (2) George ARCHER |
My maternal grandmother, Louisa Grimwood, used to say that she was the second youngest of twelve children. To date I have only been able to locate eight other siblings. At the time of her birth the family were living in Ann Street, Plumstead, Kent, England. The 1881 census also lists a Frederick Grimwood, wife Mary, and children Frederick (8), George (5), Joseph (4) and Arthur (3), together with a William Jennings, living nearby in Plumstead. It is presumed that this is George's younger brother and family. My grandmother said that some of her older brothers emigrated to Canada, and as there is twenty years between the date of her birth and the date of the eldest known brother, it is possible that some of the brothers may have left England while she was very young, hence her knowing very little about them.
Louisa married William Edwin Webb (b 1872) at a very young age and had two sons, one of whom died either at birth or soon afterwards. The other son, William, who was born in March 1899, spent some time in the Royal Marines and later emigrated to New Zealand. William Edwin Webb died when their son was young - probably prior to the First World War. Louisa was Head Laundrymaid at a Hospital / Asylum ? somewhere near Woolwich and also often spoke of working at Woolwich Arsenal during the war - putting powder in little bags! Life must have been a struggle for her.
Some time later Louisa met and married George Archer, a widower with six children. They had two children in England, and then emigrated to New Zealand in 1923.
Louisa kept in touch with her two sisters - Mary Jane and Alice for some years. It is known that Mary Jane and William Richard Denyer had three children - Jim - married Mabel ?, Edie - married Will O'Connell, and Tommy Denyer. These families lived in or around the Plumstead, Kent area.
The information above for my great-grandfather George Grimwood, his parents and siblings has been obtained from the Suffolk Records Office and IGI records, but is unable to be confirmed due to Willisham registers being destroyed in a fire some time ago. However the above is accurate to the best of my knowledge.
I would also like to acknowledge all the help I have received from both Maggie Driver and Martin Grimwood in my research of my Grimwood line. Maggie's spreadsheets have been invaluable - thank you so much Maggie for being willing to share your research with others.
