Nelson is a beachside town on the northern coast of the South Island with a population of approx 55K. It's the town where Kiwis come to vacation because of its sunny weather, fine wineries, and good cuisine. There are 3 national parks nearby, including 2 of the best hikes (Great Walks) in the country. Apple picking is a popular seasonal job for travelers passing through this area, (but not for us!).
Jon and Evan monkeying around on the cathedral steps going down to the main street. We met Jon about 15 minutes prior to the photo after finally having arrived in Nelson.
Outside the Victorian Rose pub downtown - we had some toasties for lunch. This is a fun place to go for some brews and live tunes.
There's Jill on the steps of the Cathedral looking up the main street. This is the central landmark of the city.
Another shot of downtown - lots of outdoor eatin' and coffeeshops.
We've gone on some great hikes around town. This one took us up to the center of the country.
Ta da!! The official geographic center of New Zealand!
The center of NZ with our backs to the Nelson town and harbour.
