The Heaphy Track
One of the "Great Walks" throughout the country, the Heaphy is north of Nelson, spanning 77 kms across the Kahurangi Park and ending on the amazing West Coast. Because of its popularity and relative ease, this track is poo-pooed by many Kiwis, but we definitely found it to be a challenging and beautiful four days. The forecast called for fine weather going in to the weekend, but we got hammered by rain about half the time! On the second day we had to stop by 1pm at a hut and wait out a ferocious storm until morning. But we pushed on in our soggy boots and ended the trip with sunny skies on the most scenic part of the track.

A view from the Perry Saddle Hut and a dismal beginning to our second day.
Adorned in full rain gear, Jill takes a break beside the well worn track.
We slept at the Lewis Hut, our last night on the track. No heat again but beautiful views of the Lewis and Heaphy Rivers.
