HARVEY BAY IN MAY 2001

Harvey Bay is the Whale Watching Bay on the coast. May is not whale watching time - July to November is.  It is the bay across from Fraser Island (world's largest sand island with forests and lakes and dingos that have recently mauled someone to death).

Shirley and I packed up our tent and headed north.  We stayed in one of the caravan parks on the beach front.  If you're not going over to Fraser (we didn't have the days available to do so, but someday we will - either on a tour or hire a 4-wheel drive) there isn't a lot of anything different to do or see.

We found this 800 metre pier going out to nowhere.  All along the side rails the council has put these tube holders for putting your fishing line in while you wait for a fish to bite - right along the whole 800 metres.

We also went to Rainbow beach on our way home.  Here they also run ferries across the strait to Fraser, for $30 return.  I think it was a competition thing.  It was raining so we didn't get to see the rainbow sands because they were a bit too far down the beach to walk without a 4-wheel drive.
