Kiwanis
Last Wednesday afternoon the Mountain View Kiwanis Club convened a panel of local, county, and state child care providing professionals to discuss the need for a quality preschool, especially for the needy preschool-aged children in the City of Mountain View . Representatives from the City of Mountain View , Mountain View Whisman School District , First Five, Healthy Ventures, and Santa Clara County Child Care Coordinating Council each talked about what they are doing in this area. As a follow up, Kiwanian Linda Holroyd will create a list of goals and objectives for outreach, education and fundraising and submit it to the Kiwanis board of directors for approval. The community members andchild care providers attending the forum are targeting a Januaryfollow-up date and will invite other members of the community to thefollow-up meeting. Special Guest Day Inspires Community Leaders Organized in classic volunteer fashion, the Mountain View Kiwanis Club held a special guest day on November 3rd. From the educational community alone, at least two school board members, the superintendent, at least two principals, and a staff person from the Mountain View Whisman School District attended. The main program was presented by Allan Nelson, MV Police Officer. He spoke about the Dreams and Futures program, and gangs.
One special guest asked “Why can’t I just volunteer on my own --- what does being a member do to increase my contribution to the community?” In answer, members spoke of their own ignorance of the needs of the community before joining, and of their ignorance of the strengths of the community. “I had never heard of CHAC, I had never heard of CSMA, or the CSA.” said David Conrad, of his own ignorance prior to joining the club. Eleanor Oelsner said “You can do more if you are part of a greater group --- if you see a need, such as daycare, in the community, you cannot serve the need alone. But from the club, you can perform wonders.” Upcoming programs
