EVENT OVERVIEW

Special Games Project and Silicon Valley Bowl Footall --

An Innovative Connection

The Kiwanis Club is proud to be the originator and sponsor of the Silicon Valley Bowl Game. Now in it's fourth year, the game has grown from local sponsorship by the Los Altos Kiwanis Club to a group projec of Kiwanis Division 34 - a partnership of 14 Kiwanis Clubs serving the Silicon Valley.

A worldwide service organization of women and men who share the challenge of community and world improvement, Kiwanis Clubs individually serve their communities by supporting and sponsoring a variety of annual activities, including:

  • Christmas in April
  • Back-to-School shopping for children of low income families
  • Financial support to K-12 schools
  • CASA SAY Youth Shelters
  • Collection and delivery of food to shelters and kitchens
  • Bobby Sox softball and Pop Warner Football
  • Kids in Common
  • Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army
  • Meal preparation for the homeless
  • Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts
  • Scholarships to high school students and adult education graduates
  • Local parades and festivals
  • A key project of Kiwanis Division 34 is the sponsorship of the annual Special Games for children with developmental disabilities. Kiwanis members have always used their ingenuity to raise funds for community needs. This ingenuity became the catalyst for combining support for the Special Games with the energy and enthusiasm to create an innovative bowl game which will also support the Special Games.

The goal of the Special Games is to positively reward students with developmental disabilities. Students are recognized for their effort, sportsmanship and participation in adaptive games and contests. Debuting in 1979, the games were the idea of local Kiwanian Walter D. Chronert and adaptive physical education teachers Betty Fairchild and Sue Carr Katra.

Profits generated from the Kiwanis Silicon Valley Bowl Game are used to support transportation, meals and awards for Special Games participants. Additional bowl game profits are awarded to area school programs that support adaptive activities for children with disabilities.
