Reading for the blind presents to Kiwanis

 

John Stephenson, Executive Director of  the Northern California unit of Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, presents.  His Northern California headquarters, with more than 200 volunteers, creates over 140 recordings every year.

 

The organization asserts that more than 40,000 students in the 9 county area could benefit from their products, and that it costs $150 to reach, equip, train and support each student. Their goal is to serve an additional 5,000 students in the near term.

 

Bell Ringing Netted More than $40/hour

 

  In front of Trader Joes, several Kiwanians rang a bell, and more than $40 per hour entered the bucket. The Salvation army usually pays ringers $7/hour to perform the function filled by the Kiwanians.

 

Arbor day is March 12 is also Total K day

 

 

Chamber mixer 5pm

 January 12th

 

The usual Wednesday noon meeting will be replaced next week. At 5 pm, On January 12th the Kiwanis Club will host the Chamber of Commerce “Mixer” at Don Giovanni’s. A perfect chance to recruit new members.

 

$50,000 in Grants

 

The foundation board of directors approved $50,000 in grants to be distributed at the January 19th meeting.

 

Legendary Founder of ETrade to speak

 

On February 16, 2005, William A. Porter will speak to the Mountain View Kiwanis Club at our regular meeting at Don Giovanni’s restaurant on Castro street in Mountain View.

 

 Mr, Porter is a founder and the first Chairman of ISE. His career is marked by significant innovation, having conceived and developed several new technology based businesses. Mr. Porter is chairman emeritus of E*TRADE, the very first real-time on-line electronic brokerage service, which he established in 1992 and has since led the industry in bringing unmatched efficiencies and cost-savings to the investing public. Beginning in 1980, Mr. Porter conceived and implemented several new financial services, including the first on-line financial management service bureau.

Mr. Porter has held numerous senior management positions, including Chairman of Trelleborg Rubber Company; President of Tretorn Shoes; President of Commercial Electronics Incorporated as well as several senior level positions in the science and technology arena.

Mr. Porter holds 14 patents, having developed a number of electronic devices and processes. These include the first shoulder mounted back pack broadcast color TV camera; the first electronic diesel-electric locomotive check-out system; the first infrared horizon sensor for satellite stabilization and several other breakthroughs still in use today in a variety of fields.

Mr. Porter has a M.S. in Management from MIT, where he was a Sloan Fellow, a M.S. in Physics from Kansas State College and a B.A. in Mathematics from Adams State College.
