(M65 is at near center in sketch) Aim Telescope to Chertan in Leo, Star 73 and fainter companion also appear in the same FOV of finderscope. About 1 degree in East direction from star 73, it has a star mag7, center cross hair at the star mag7. At eyepiece, look at south of the star mag7, M65,M66 & star mag7 form as right triangle, which the right angle is at M65. At M66, it has a star mag9.8 nearby that help identify M66's position. M65 & M66 appear in the same FOV of low power eyepiece (FOV about 1 degree). M65 is more elongate than M66, both appear as faint smudge of light at the same difficult rate, as the Surface Brightness (SB) are nearly the same. The image was unstable due to seeing & light polluted condition. All technic are required for this observation: e.g. observing near zenith, avert vision, black cloth covering.. Refer to text: bright, large, very elongated, very bright nucleus. extends 80,000 ly, Hubble class Sb. A member of Leo Triplet (M65,M66 & NGC3628) Note: NGC3628 couldn't be observed as its SB is very low. Home |
