Lil' Calvin's Checkup Page!
Maternal Pneumococcal Vaccine Study

I began participating in this study while I was pregnant.  The study involves the use of the vaccine Prevnar, which is used to prevent spinal meningitis & has also been found to reduce the number of ear infections in infants.  The vaccine has been in wide use already in both adults & infants, & when used as part of the set of vaccinations given at 2, 4 & 6 months of age, it is found to provide good immunity beginning around 6 months.

The premise of the study is to see if the vaccine, when given to pregnant mothers at 34 weeks, will increase the level of immunity in infants between 0 & 6 months.  We will be participants until Lil' Calvin is 13 months, then we will be informed if I received the real vaccine or the placebo.

I received the vaccination at 34 weeks, which was fortunate because I ended up delivering him unexpectedly at 35 weeks!  So far things are going well, he has had no adverse reactions to the Prevnar vaccinations he's received at his 2- & 4-month checkups.
