These were taken on Mount Etna in Sicily. It is the largest volcano in Europe. We took a ski lift, then a bus, then hiked until we reached an altitude of 3000 meters. It was amazing, really. Eventually there was no vegetation at all, and it seemed as if we were on the moon. To not have any vegetation, there were still a lot of bugs! Overall, it was very cool, although it was a little eerie to be climbing up a volcano that we could see spurt lava at night. They did assure me that it was quite normal to see that, and if it quit doing it for a while, that was when an eruption might occur.
Taorima, Sicily, has been listed in the Guiness Book of Records as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It definitely holds true to this title. This picture could be used for a postcard or a painting. We saw several ruins of amphitheaters in Sicily, but this was by far the most beautiful.
Legend says that if you throw a penny over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain, you will someday return to Rome. Of all days to not have any change with me! I do still hope to go back someday. Rome is a very beautiful city with so much culture and art, it is almost overwhelming. It is amazing to think that there are structures there that are older than our country. I definitely would like to spend more time there in the near future.
I really have no idea what this big kitty represented, but I just had to get a picture of him. We did not get a chance to ask anybody about it, but we did learn a lot about other sites just from people we met on the streets. Everybody was so hospitible and so willing to explain things to us. It was really a wonderful experience.
