This lesson is for students studying the California Missions. It provides an alternative format for that annual fourth grade rite of passage, the mission report. After researching an individual mission and writing reports, the students will place their report text into a template of 5 HTML text files. The completed project will be a linked set of 5 publishable web pages presenting the information. It will consists of a home page of general information with links to four pages focusing on specific mission topics - location, history, architecture, and vital statistics Basic knowledge of the computerŐs operating system and keyboarding skills are required. If the students have the ability to copy, cut, and paste they should be able to successfully complete this assignment with minimal guidance. If the students lack these skills, these files could be used to teach them. Once they get a little practice they should be able to master this repetitive task. This lesson contains a template of 5 simple text fileswith HTML tags. These files appear as history.html, location.html, architecture.html, stats.html, and home.html. They are in the HTML folder. Each of these files has a corresponding worksheet. These files appear as history.ws, location.ws, architecture.ws, stats.ws, and home.ws. They are in the worksheet folder This would probably be best presented in a series of five lessons, one for each file. The worksheet should be completed before the corresponding file is changed. The worksheets are almost identical copies of the html files. The students will replace the generic text in the document with information relating to their mission. The generic text appears in 18 point bold type and prompts what needs to be replaced. For example, If the large, bold text says place name of mission here the student replaces the large, bold text with the name of the particular mission. Have the students cross out the bold 18 point type on the worksheet.. Remind them this is what they are going to cut out of the html file. Have the write the appropriate replacement text. This is what they are going to type in. Once the students complete the worksheet they will be more familiar with the file once it is opened. Once the worksheet is completed give a demonstration of the procedures on the computer. Then allow the students to make the changes to the appropriate html file The teacher will guide the students through the first couple of worksheets. Remind them to stay within the tags. They should be able to complete the final three sheets on their own.
