Captain Octavius is the son of one of Queen Moire’s councilors, and was suggested to Vere by Princess Rilsa. Vere was impressed by Octavius’ determination to be judged on his own merits, not on his family connections. Captain Trajan is a strong traditionalist, a supporter of the status quo in Rebma. He was moved by Vere’s description of the treachery of the rebels in the Isles. Sgt Thasos is a strong-willed man who isn’t afraid to give his opinion to his superiors, but knows the importance of following orders during combat, and supporting his commander even when the orders are questionable.
