That Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people; and that these horses and burros are fast disappearing from the American scene.Mustangs are an amazing breed of horse. They are a horse with a will power that is unbreakable. And I know that they need our help and protection!!
--Congress, 1971
Mustangs are horses that are decendent to the horses that escaped from the Spanish ships that broght them over. Mustangs range in size from 13.5 hands to 15.5 hands. They also come in any color, white, black, buckskin, bay, chestnut, paint, ect.
The mustang is a strudy breed of horse that is the clear living symbol of the Old West. However, there are those who don't agree with that. You know who they are? You know that burger your eating? Those ribs that your cooking for dinner? [evil laugh] Yes, cattle ranchers. Cattle have lobbists, mustangs don't.
Cattle ranchers view this beutiful, intelligent animal as a stupid, lowly pest that needs to be exterminated. Before the Wild Free-Roaming Horse Act the ranchers would either go out and kill the mustangs or hire people to go out for them and either kill the horses or capture them and sell them to sluater for dog food or everyone's best friend glue. You know why? The cattle ranchers claim that the mustangs eat too much grass and that the grass that the horses eat take away from the profit that they make.
