The Joys of Parenthood
Chapter Forty-Seven: A Pair of Plans

“What exactly is interesting, doctor?” Amon asked impatiently, attempting to read the paper over the other man’s shoulder, “It would be appreciated if you could explain what is going on with my daughter.” Dr. Takahashi sighed and pushed his hair away from his eyes, rolling them with a touch of annoyance.

“It would be appreciated if you could please step away from me. You’re blocking the light and distracting me,” Dr. Takahashi hissed, turning his attention back to the slip he held gently, “Besides, Amon, you can’t read what this says anyway; it’s coded and only I know how to decipher it. I’ll be finished in one moment and I’ll be quite happy to divulge all the details at that point. But, for now, I need to be undistracted.” He smiled briefly as Amon stepped back hurriedly and joined Robin in her task of impatiently watching the doctor methodically memorize every word of the printout.

After a few tense moments passed, Dr. Takahashi silently set down the blue sheet and rubbed tiredly at his eyes. He flung himself into a cold metal chair and stared with wide eyes at the sleeping little girl still attached to the rainbow of wires that trailed to the multitude of machines.

“Doctor?” Robin prompted softly, her emerald eyes clouded heavily with worry, “Is there something wrong with Javan?” Dr. Takahashi smiled weakly and shook his head as he stood back up and walked towards the pair of hunters.

“No, there’s nothing wrong with Javan. I’m just stunned by the results of the test, that’s all. I never expected anything like that. Never, not even in my most far-fetched theories did I ever think that such a little body could play host to that much pure energy,” Dr. Takahashi said with amazement as a rime to his voice, adding on when he noticed Amon edgily waiting for a definitive answer, “Javan, our dear little girl, has already developed her craft. It’s mental abilities at this point, but, with proper training, it could probably develop into a physical craft. I only say that because of her extremely young age.” Amon’s near black eyes darted to his young daughter, apprehension painting his gaze.

“She’s such a strong girl,” Robin murmured, twisting her slender fingers together, “Javan will be just fine. She’ll be able to handle the training without a problem.” The craft user toyed with a loose strand of blonde hair as she looked to the doctor for confirmation of her words.

“Of course she can handle the training process,” Dr. Takahashi stated boisterously, smiling broadly as he began to pull off the probes and patches he had previously stuck on Javan, “Amon, would you and Robin like to help me develop a plan suitable for the situation so that Javan is educated about her abilities as well as is currently possible?” The dark man nodded once and the happily chattering doctor swept him off, as well as his hunting partner, into another room.

*Somewhere else…I’m not quite sure where, exactly*

“I never did trust that man,” a hooded figure said with distaste as he flicked off a switch, blackening the screen he had just been watching, “I should have never let him live. Now look at what my kindness has done for me. He’s gone and helped my foe discover the truth about Javan’s talents.” The brown haired girl who sat at his feet smiled playfully at him and held up a platter of fresh fruit in a futile attempt to distract him.

“Emberli, stop acting like an idiot,” a young woman growled from the shadows, gesturing with her gloved hands for the girl to leave the room, “Go make yourself useful and leave our Master alone. Your company is not beneficial to him. Besides, Ethan and I need to speak with him.” With speed that could have rivaled a freshly fired bullet, Emberli darted from the room and scampered out into the equally dark hallway. A tall, yellow-eyed teenager sauntered in slowly, his sharp features painted with sadistic amusement.

“I see our resident hacker has gotten over the demise of her brother,” Ethan said gleefully, fingering the hilt of the knife attached to his belt, “I thought she would have been broken for at least three or four more days before she tried to pander herself to you, Master. I tried my hardest to present Bryton to her in the worst way possible. I guess she’s just a fool who only cares about her own skin, like most everyone else.” He crossed his arms and sighed with annoyance as he leaned against his Master’s chair.

“You always were the twisted one, Ethan. I love that in you. That cruel fire that won’t flicker out until you die,” the Master cooed, patting Ethan’s bleached blonde hair playfully before turning his attention back to the woman, “And you, my Caydria, you look stunning today. Just like normal. If the twins were here, it would be perfect.” Caydria smiled pleasantly and batted thick eyelashes over vivid violet eyes, pouring a shimmering green liquid into a small glass from an etched decanter.

“I saw them in the hallway. They should be here shortly,” Ethan said flatly, glancing at the doorway out of the corners of his icy eyes. The Master laughed softly and folded his pale hands over his lap, settling against the high back of his ornate chair.

“We’ll wait for them to arrive, before we discuss our problem in that case. They are rather important little demons and they ought to be informed, just like you two,” the Master stated strongly, quelling the impatient comment he had been about to receive from his blonde companion, “I have only my four Selects. My best four, the most vicious and the most talented are all that remain. The others were a waste of time. But with Robin and Javan, think of the possibilities. They have excellent abilities, which would even rival one of my four if they could properly apply themselves. We’ll train them, teach them…” He trailed off when he was interrupted by the sound of a throat being cleared loudly.

“Are these constant monologues really necessary?” Julian asked coldly as he walked forward, his sister following closely behind, “At first they were interesting but now they’re just annoying. Perhaps a soliloquy every now and again would be better for everyone involved.” He smirked as the Master clapped and nodded his agreement.

“I’ll keep that in mind, my boy,” the Master conceded, glancing around to make sure that none of the lesser witches still remained in the chamber, “Juliana, Julian, could you put up a wind barrier to keep any one from eavesdropping in on this. I don’t want any idiots running around with information that they shouldn’t have. A bad situation could arise, like when my stupid lackey tried to be a hero and got himself killed.” His four companions laughed uncomfortably and all weakly smiled until their Master waved his hand for them to stop. He nodded at the twins curtly and they conjured up a wall of air that was compressed until it was nearly solid.

“I can freeze the water molecules,” Ethan offered, his eyes glinting at the possibility of a chance to show off. He tried desperately to act like he didn’t care if he got his task or not, but failed miserably.

“It won’t be necessary. That, Ethan, would attract too much attention. A solid wall of ice would be painfully obvious compared to the only slightly distorted image the compressed air offers. You need to think things through, Ethan,” the Master scolded sharply, his voice like a razorblade to the boy who had desired lavish amounts of praise, “Perhaps I should give your assignment to Julian and Juliana. At least they can plan ahead and imagine the consequences of their actions.” The identical children smirked at the blonde teenager, smugly assured of their positions in the group.

“Master, he’s very simpleminded. He can only think of the kill and the next few tasks require much more tact than a slaughter. He might be tempted to take the easy route, killing Robin and Javan in the process,” Juliana crooned, her soft voice ringing with a frozen melody, “Ethan is good for a cheap kill, but I think he’d fail if he had to deal with people in a civilized manner.” She brushed her midnight black hair away from her cold blood red eyes and innocently twined her small fingers together, blinking slowly in a dangerous sort of way. Ethan stared at the little girl with hate-filled eyes, promising a severely painful punishment if he ever caught her when she was alone.

“Calm yourselves. A bitter feud now wouldn’t do a thing for me. I need all of my minions alive,” the Master soothed, gesturing for everyone to find a chair, “In any case, we need not plan to approach Robin and Javan for little while.” The four witches stopped their searches for seats and stared at the man who watched their every move from the middle of the room, stunned and highly surprised by what he had said.

“Why not?” Caydria asked after she regained her voice, fiddling nervously with the hem of her dark dress, “Are we going to kill Amon or one of the others first?”

“Oh, no, my dear. I’ve decided on something much better. I’m going to wait and see how well they can train Javan, at least for a little while,” the Master said darkly, hints of sadistic laughter creeping into his voice, “And, when they think that we’re finally gone and out of the way, we’ll strike. Win in the most glorious way. I’ll get my bride and the little girl without a hitch. Who knows, maybe they’ll come to us.” The laughter finally spilled forth and echoed off of the compressed air, distorting and twisting to produce something truly horrendous.

Author’s Note: I’d like to thank Ariyana for suggesting an idea that planted the seed for most of this chapter. *huggles* You’re an absolute doll.
