Chapter Fifty: Reika’s Visit
“What happened?” Amon asked sharply, leaning closer to where the doctor sat. Dr. Takahashi smiled and straightened his papers; pulling the top sheet off and lazily letting his eyes flick over it before he turned his attention back to his patients.
“I said that Javan projected her terror away from herself out of defense. It don’t think it was a conscious effort but it definitely proves that her abilities, while just mental now, could easily progress into physical,” Dr. Takahashi explained, returning the paper to its proper place, “She managed to render two grown men and another craft user unconscious while she suffered only a touch of fatigue.” He slowly stood up and strode over to a television set; he pulled a thin disk from inside of his pocket and slid it into the appropriate slot.
The screen flickered into life and soon revealed a black and white overhead view of the room where Javan had been tested three days before hand. They watched as the events unfolded in silence and were horrified as they saw themselves collapse onto the floor. After the Robin on the screen lapsed out of awareness, the picture grew fuzzy and slid into blackness.
“What happened to the camera at the end wasn’t supposed to happen,” Dr. Takahashi stated, returning the shiny disk to his pocket, “A lot of the electronic equipment was shut down when Javan sent out her emotions. I’m still trying to figure out how she did it.” He set himself back down and focused a strangely intense gaze upon the pair of hunters. Robin instinctively pushed herself against her chair, vaguely frightened by the utter seriousness that was splashed across the normally happy-go-lucky doctor’s face.
“Do you think that you’d be able to find out what happened if you run more tests?” Amon asked slowly, as if he didn’t want to release the words. The doctor sighed gently and rubbed at his eyes, looking much older than he had ever looked before.
“Yes,” Dr. Takahashi said simply, adding on the rest of his words like they were painful afterthoughts, “But you two can’t be around her, should you decide to allow the tests to be performed.” Amon’s eyes narrowed in suspicion and distaste while he maintained absolute silence; he wasn’t sure he wanted to know why he would have to leave his only child alone with an enigmatic doctor who freely admitted that he treats their enemies.
“I think that we need and deserve a proper explanation, doctor,” Robin said calmly, closing her bottle green eyes when she felt a remnant of terror wash over her briefly. Neither of the two men noticed her discomfort; Amon was too busy glaring and Dr. Takahashi was trying to figure out the best way to phrase his answer.
“You see; any child would be distracted from her studies by her parents,” Dr. Takahashi explained tactfully, smiling slightly when Amon’s glare became even more intense, “Yes, Amon, I know that Robin isn’t truly Javan’s mother. But to Javan she is and that’s enough to warrant that Robin be kept away as well.” The blonde craft user’s lips curled up vaguely in a private smile; she wasn’t about to let her hunting partner know how much she really loved his young daughter and how attached she was.
“I’m not sure I trust you enough to leave Javan with you for more than a day,” Amon said coldly, shifting in his chair to make himself as intimidating as was humanly possible. The doctor simply smiled jovially and shrugged his shoulders in an almost mocking manner.
“It’s really up to you; I can’t force you to let me keep Javan here. I highly recommend that you do, since it’s the only way that I’ll be able to run the proper tests without putting anybody at risk again,” Dr. Takahashi said casually, gesticulating absent-mindedly, “How about this? If something should happen to the little girl, which it won’t, you can personally inflict all the bodily harm that you want, Amon.” The dark-eyed hunter’s lips curled vaguely into a miniature sadistic smile; he had the opportunity to seek revenge for everything that the doctor had put them through.
“I’ll agree to that, if I can inflict the harm for emotional damage that could be done to Javan as well,” Amon said in a frighteningly warm tone. He knew quite well that his daughter would at least suffer some mental trauma and as much as he’d rather that not happen, he figured that he might as well get a bit of enjoyment out of torturing the man who would inflict it. The doctor thought about Amon’s words for a few silent moments before he slowly nodded and held his hand out to the hunter.
“It’s a deal,” Dr. Takahashi said solemnly, praying that the test results would be worth the pain he’d be going through in the future, “Shall we go to visit Javan? I think it would be a good idea for the two of you to tell her that everything will be alright.” Wordlessly, the pair of hunters stood up and Dr. Takahashi gestured out the door. Their trek through the halls was filled with a tense and apprehensive quiet, until they reached pediatric wing where they were bombarded with laughter from the children who were well enough to play.
“I see that the floor is quite alive today,” Dr. Takahashi said brightly to the nurse sitting behind the counter as he leaned on it, “Can you give me the key to the room? I’m taking Javan’s father and his friend into see her before I start some more tests on her.” The nurse smiled at the pair of hunters standing uncomfortably behind the doctor.
“You don’t need the key, sir,” the nurse stated happily, her motherly face beaming as children hurried past her post, “The door is already unlocked.” She began to turn her attention back to her computer when Dr. Takahashi grabbed her wrist tightly.
“What do you mean by ‘the door is already unlocked’?” Dr. Takahashi asked worriedly, his eyes overflowing with basic fear and anger. The nurse whimpered softly and tried to pull her hand away from his grasp.
“Her mother showed up to see her. So I gave her the key to get into the room. You said that family could see Javan,” the nurse explained hastily, sighing with relief when her wrist was released, “There isn’t a problem, sir.” Amon and Robin shot each other looks that spelled out that they had to be on guard. The blonde girl quietly slid her glasses on while her partner rested his hand on his gun.
“There wouldn’t be a problem if Javan’s mother hadn’t died months ago, in this very hospital,” Dr. Takahashi said coldly, hurrying down the hall with the hunters on his heels. The nurse scurried out from behind her desk to try to explain her actions to her boss.
“She looked just like the little girl though,” the nurse said rapidly, her tongue tripping slightly over a few of her words because of her swiftness, “She even had bright blue eyes, though she was quite obviously pure Japanese. When she introduced herself, she said her name was Reika and that she was quite worried about her only child because she had just learned that Javan had been hospitalized.” Three pairs of eyes momentarily were pinned to the terrified nurse before they set off down the hall at a sprint.
“It’s locked!” Dr. Takahashi spat angrily, throwing his weight against the door. Amon shoved the doctor out of the way and kicked once; the hinges on the door snapped and it fell deafeningly onto the tiled floor. What they saw in the room stunned each of the trio; they didn’t have time to regain their senses to react at all.
Reika stood over Javan’s still form; her long black hair and vivid blue eyes glittering softly in the sunlight that streamed in through the open window. She brushed the little girl’s bangs off of her face and kissed her forehead gently, tucking a thin slip of paper under Javan’s tiny hand. Her gaze flicked up to the doorway and a playful smile tugged at her lips. A tiny silk bag fell from her loose fingertips onto the bed before she walked to the window and pushed the waving curtains out of her way.
“It was nice to see you again, Amon,” Reika said sweetly as she stepped out onto the grass, batting her long eyelashes twice. As soon as she was completely outside, she ran off and vanished amid the people that were wandering the hospital grounds.
