F.A.A.S. REPORT 12-98
By Rosemay L. Mearns
I just received the F.A.A.S. Bulletin. There is a lot in it to report to the Club.
Maxine Gorsline is the President, and she has a lot in her President's Message.
"Oceans Limited" is putting on a conference Nov. 17-20 in Vancouver, B.C. on
Marine Pollution, Biodiversity in Marine Ecosystems, and Global Climate Change and Oceans.
Each of these topics will be debated on-line over the next few months on their web-site at
http://www.sfu/ ca/oceans.
If your society would like to host the 1999 national FAAS convention, its not too late to
notify any member of the board. The question of your society receiving acknowledgments for
our different programs has been brought up again. Maxine brought this up to the board and
committee chairpersons in her October President's BOD letter. If you do not receive a
timely acknowledgment, please contact her. She also says: We are continuing to update our
handbook, and are currently working on the Program and Publication Award programs. You can
expect to receive the revised rules for the Publication Awards in November. Based on
feedback, we assume the clubs are content to wait until the yearly FAAS Convention draws
to a close for FAAS to send out Certificates that are not awarded at the convention.
May Peace, Love, and Joy be with you and yours this holiday season.
Afterward: Leighton Irwin has resigned from the FAAS BOD effective 11-20-98, for personal
reasons. There are four new appointments (3 chairpersons, and one new board member):
Bob Cashin - 1999 Elections
Linda Pattenaude - Awards
Randy Seufert -- Advertising
Jim Quarles - BOD, 1997-
99, & Nominations
Jim Quarles is a noted author, especially of Discus books, and has an article in the most
recent issue of Freshwater and Marine Aquarium magazine. He is also one of their
contributing editors. (Background on the Chairpersons is in the FAAS Report). If any of
you want to run for a seat on the FAAS Board next year, Jim is the man to contact. His
address, phone #, and e-mail address are in the FAAS Report.
FAAS Report's Editor is Marge Anderson, and she writes about the 1998 FAAS Convention,
which was hosted by NY-PENN Council at their Falls Fish Festival '98 in Niagara Falls at
the end of September. "It turned out to be one of the most fun weekends I had in a
long time." The co-chairs, Randy Seufert and Bill Duzen, organized a wonderful event.
The Hospitality Room was kept well-stocked with food and soft drinks, hosted by an
excellent local fish store called "The Fish Place." We had the Awards Ceremony,
where we gave out special recognitions to both Mid-South A.S. and Youngstown Area Tropical
Fish Society for 25 years of FAAS membership. A plaque was given to Motor City A.S. for
their 18 years of service in printing, collating, and mailing the FAAS Report. On Friday
night they had a magic show, then played FISHO. Fallside Resort (our hotel) hosted our
banquet, and the speaker was Stephen Smith, who spoke on the future of Aquarium Societies,
and involving the next generation.
The 1998 FAAS Delegates' Meeting also took place at the Convention, and they discussed the
HAP & BAP Programs, and rewriting the Handbook, with an emphasis on Publication
Awards.
Jerry Montgomery, Chair of the Programs Committee, reports that FAAS is evaluating and
revising all the program material at this time. They need expert assistance. They are
updating the scientific names, rewriting the scripts, and looking for new slides. They
plan to have some ready next year, and will announce it in the FAAS Report.
Phil Anderson, Chair of the FAAS BAP Program, reminds local BAP chairpersons to get their
paperwork in on time.
KAS members need to turn in to Rosemay the articles and artwork you want to enter in the
FAAS Publication Awards. I have to get them to FAAS before January 31, 1999.
