mako and i went to okinawa over a 3 day weekend and to our surprise it really was like visiting a different country...meaning it did not feel japanese, but more like hawaii meets china. all the buildings seemed a bit sunbaked and run down and everyone moved and talked a little slower.

we loved the food but can`t recomend the goya fruit which, to my sensibilities, tasted like chewing a box of aspirin.  and we`re still not sure if the local hooch, called awamori (made from nobby mountain potatoes, wheat, and fruit) is methyl or ethyl alcohol...

we also witnessed the local favorite sport of ram fighting, wherein two old billy goats butt heads until dizzy...but in the match we saw the two young goats tried to get it on with each other instead..a true win-win situation. i`ll spare you the pictures...

ahh, shuri castle, actually it`s only a model...
this is a world wide heritage site, nakijin castle. okinawains built thier castles for the gods not for defensive purposes. and a good thing too considering it`s current state of repair...

international street in naha, a confusing and througly fun way
to beat the heat.  this "indoor" bazaar is in reality just an entire neighborhood covered-over with a makeshift ceiling between the roof tops of the originally outdoor structures..
this shot took me five minutes to climb & pose for...at least nobody will mistake me for a marine.
