KITH History

Who the heck are the Kids In The Hall??!!

The Kids In The Hall are a Canadian comedy troupe consisting of 5 members. Existing since 1983, the troupe started out as only two guys: Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald. Later, they met up with Mark McKinney and Bruce McCulloch, who had their own comedy troupe called The Audience. Combining their comic genius, the four decided to become one big troupe, called the Kids In The Hall (this name, by the way, was taken from an old quote Jack Benny used to say after a joke, I got that one from the kids in the hall). They began performing and writing for shows at the Second City workshops in Toronto. One night, Mark invited Scott Thompson to come perform with them for that show. He never left

A year later, the kids made a development deal with Lorne Michaels, executive producer and creator of Saturday Night Live. After much negotiation with HBO, Lorne got them their own pilot episode in 1988, and in 1989, they landed their own TV series. For 5 years, their witty and off the wall comedy made the people watching at homewelllaugh their butts off! Until 1994, when they decided to call it quits. It wasnt the end for the troupe, though, only the show. In 1996, they released their first ever movie called Kids In The Hall: Brian Candy, a fun movie about a scientist who invents a happy drug that immediately sweeps the nation, just to find out later that the drug causes its patients to go into a coma. Among critics and some movie goers, the film was considered OK - of which fans might agree is under-exhagerating.

After the release of Brain Candy, the Kids went their separate ways. They didnt split up! Just simply took time off from the troupe to concentrate on their own separate careers. Dave went on to star in the NBC sitcom, NewsRadio; Mark became a cast member of Saturday Night Live; Scott went on to work with the Larry Sanders show; Bruce began directing, and worked on films such as Dog Park and Superstar; and Kevin wrote for and guest starred in sitcoms in LA. It wasnt until 1999 when they considered getting back together to do a reunion tour.

They toured the US and Canada in two shows, two years apart. Their first, Tour of Duty, being in 2000, and their second, Same Guys New Dresses, being in 2002. Now, fans can only hope that they consider touring again in the near future, or even making another movie!
