1 What does the word "Islam" mean?
"Islam"
means "submission to the will of Allah (God)".
2 Why did pilgrims visit the city of Mecca?
In
the city of Mecca was an old shrine called the Kaaba. It had
idols in it andpilgrims went there
to pray to these idols.
3 Why did some of the people of Mecca want to kill Mohammed?
Mohammed
taught people not to pray to idols. If people believed
him, they would notgo to Mecca to
pray to the idols. Then, the
people of Mecca could not collect moneyfrom
the pilgrims. So,
some of them wanted to kill Mohammed.
4 Where did Mohammed go to escape?
In
AD 622, Mohammed fled to Medina. This year became the
first year of theMuslim calendar.
5 What was it that made poorer people take up Islam?
Poorer people were attracted to Islam because it taught that all people were equaland so society would be fairer.
6 What did Muslims believe about the Koran?
Muslims
believed that the words in the Koran were those of
Allah, spoken throughhis prophet
Mohammed.
7 What are the Five Pillars of Islam?
The Five Pillars are the things that every Muslim must do. They are:
Allah is the one true God, and Mohammed is Allah's messenger. Muslims must pray five times a day, facing Mecca.Muslims cannot eat or drink from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan.
Muslims must help the poor.
Muslims
must visit the Kaaba at Mecca at least once in their
lifetime.

After
Mohammed's death in AD 632, Muslim armies spread Islam
eastwards toIndia and westwards
