1 What does the word "Islam" mean?

"Islam" means "submission to the will of Allah (God)".
 

 

2 Why did pilgrims visit the city of Mecca?

In the city of Mecca was an old shrine called the Kaaba. It had                     idols in it andpilgrims went there to pray to these idols.
 

 

3 Why did some of the people of Mecca want to kill                     Mohammed?

Mohammed taught people not to pray to idols. If people believed                     him, they would notgo to Mecca to pray to the idols. Then, the                     people of Mecca could not collect moneyfrom the pilgrims. So,                     some of them wanted to kill Mohammed.
 

 

4 Where did Mohammed go to escape?

In AD 622, Mohammed fled to Medina. This year became the                     first year of theMuslim calendar.
 

 

5 What was it that made poorer people take up Islam?

Poorer people were attracted to Islam because it taught that all                     people were equaland so society would be fairer.

     6 What did Muslims believe about the Koran?

Muslims believed that the words in the Koran were those of                     Allah, spoken throughhis prophet Mohammed.
 

 

7 What are the Five Pillars of Islam?

The Five Pillars are the things that every Muslim must do.                     They are:

Allah is the one true God, and Mohammed is Allah's messenger. Muslims must pray five times a day, facing Mecca.Muslims cannot eat or drink from sunrise to sunset during the                        month of Ramadan.

                    Muslims must help the poor.

Muslims must visit the Kaaba at Mecca at least once in their                        lifetime.
 

 

8 What helped to spread Islam to different parts of the world?

After Mohammed's death in AD 632, Muslim armies spread Islam                     eastwards toIndia and westwards to North Africa and into Spain.
 

 

9 What advances did Muslims make in science and mathematics?

That the earth turned on its own axis and went round the sun.

Invented algebra and developed trigonometry.

Learned the numbers 1 to 9 from the Indians and it is believed                        they added the zero.
 

 

10 What advance did they make in geography?

They made the most accurate maps at the time.
 

 

11 Name one famous Muslim story book.

"Tales from the Arabian Nights".
 

 

12 How did Muslims help with the spread of culture?

When Muslim traders travelled to China, India, Africa and                     Europe, they broughteastern and western cultures to and from                     these places.
