Notes for Johannes (John) KISTLER

Birth:

The will of Barbara Kistler, wife of Johannes Kistler, names her five sons in this sequence: John George, William, Jacob, Abraham, and John. This list appears to be in birth order. Since it is known that Abraham was baptized at the age of nine weeks by Rev Schumacher in February of 1762, it can be deduced that Abraham was born in late December, 1761. Thus, John must have been born later -- sometime between late 1762 and the death of his father about 1773.

There is a Berks County Orphans Court petition dated August 10, 1784 on behalf of "...John Kistler, a minor above the age of fourteen years one of the children of John Kistler late of Albany Township in Berks County yeoman deceased." "...Your petitioners said father lately died seized and posessed of a considerable real & personal estate he therefore praying your worships would be pleased to admit him to make choice of some proper person as guardian to take care of his person and estate according to law." Signed Johannes Kistler. The court appointed John Probst as guardian. Thus, John was born some time before 1770. The term "lately died" appears to be legal boilerplate and not a literal indication of when his father died.

Source of information below: Carolyn K. Buttolph, Fairfax, VA, KISTLER FAMILIES OF NORTH CAROLINA (unpublished). Letters in brackets ( ) indicate Buttolph's reference code for the individual.

I believe John moved to North Carolina with his older brothers George (BA) and Jacob (BC) sometime before 1790. In North Carolina, John settled in Rowan
County. He seems to have married three times. Rowan County marriage records show that on 3/24/1792, John Kistler married Susanna Lopp. John's second wife was Mary Barringer (m. 1798). His third wife was Mary Barbara Hollar Lippard; IREDELL COUNTY HERITAGE shows that Mary Barbara, born 1771, widow of John Lippard who died in 1821, then married John Kistler.
John died in 1841 at age 74 (this indicates a birth date of 1767). John's will, dated March 1841and probated November 1841, names his wife as Mary B. His children are named as follows:

Jacob BEA
Christina BEB
John BEC
Henry BED
Paul BEE
Mary BEF
Margaret/Peggy BEG
