Notes for John KISTLER

Source of information below: Carolyn K. Buttolph, Fairfax, VA, KISTLER FAMILIES OF NORTH CAROLINA (unpublished). Letters in brackets ( ) indicate Buttolph's reference code for the individual.

There were several different individuals named "John Kistler" (or Kestler, Keesler, etc.) who lived in or around Rowan County, NC, about 1790-1810. By studying the records across several decades it is possible to identify and track each family separately.

John (BCA), born about 1785, would have been included in his father's household in the 1790 and 1800 Census records. The 1810 Census records for Rowan County show John (BCA) "Kusler"; John (BE) "Keisler"; and John (RB) Kesler. The entry which seems to refer to John (BCA) shows one male under 10; one male 16-26; one female under 10; and one female 16-26. The 1820 Census records for Rowan County again show John (BCA) "Kesler Jr."; John (BE) "Kesler Sr."; and John (RB) Kesler. Note that the designations "Jr." and "Sr." denote age, not relationship. The particular entry which seems to refer to John (BCA) shows four males under 10; one male 10-16; one male 26-45; and two females 10-16. This entry seems to cover John and seven children. His first wife appears to be absent -- I believe she may have died sometime before 1820.

The 1830 Census records for Rowan County again show John (BCA) "Kestler"; John (BE) "Kestler Sr."; and John (RB) "Kesler". Additionally, the 1830 Census records for Iredell County, NC, show John (BEC) Kesler (born in 1804). The particular entry which seems to refer to John (BCA) shows two males 5-10; two males 10-15; one male 15-20; one male 20-30; one male 40-50; and one female 20-30. Although this entry can be interpreted several different ways, I believe the entry shows John (BCA), six of his sons, and John's (third) wife.

John (BCA) probably was born about 1785. Most likely he would have been included in his father's household in the 1790 and 1800 Census record.
As already noted, the 1810 Census records which seem to pertain to John (BCA) show one male under 10; one male 16-26; one female under 10; and one female 16-26. This suggests that John (BCA) married sometime about 1805-1807.
Marriage Records of Rowan County, NC, 1753-1868, show that on 12/29/1804 John W. "Kiestler" married Jane E. McNeely. This entry may refer to John (BCA). It must be kept in mind, however, that there are several other men named "John" to whom this entry might also refer. When Jacob (BC), the father of John (BCA), died in 1812, George Clodfelter and John Kistler (perhaps BCA but possibly BE or BAG) administered the estate. Of course, John (BCA) was an heir and was included in the settlement of the estate. Subsequently, in 1815, John (BCA) and his sister Catherine (she is identified as "of Lincoln county",) let George Lingle have their portion of their inheritance (property near Thyatira in Rowan County, NC).

Census records indicate that John (BCA) had at least the following children:

son (born ca 1805) (1810/1820/1830 Census)
dau (born ca 1808) (1810/1820 Census)
dau (born ca 1810) (1820 Census)
son (born ca 1812) (1820 Census)
son (born ca 1814) (1820/1830 Census)
son (born ca 1816) (1820/1830 Census)
son (born ca 1818) (1820/1830 Census)
son (born ca 1821) (1830 Census)
son (born ca 1823) (1830 Census)

John (BCA) and his family seem to disappear from Rowan County after the 1830 Census -- perhaps after the death of his mother in 1835.
