Notes for Jacob KISTLER

Source of information below: Carolyn K. Buttolph, Fairfax, VA, KISTLER FAMILIES OF NORTH CAROLINA (unpublished). Letters in brackets ( ) indicate Buttolph's reference code for the individual.

Neither birth nor death records have been located. But indications are that Jacob (BCB) was born about 1784. He is named in his father's estate papers in 1812. In 1816, Jacob--of Lincoln County, NC--sold his portion of his inheritance near Thyatira in Rowan County, NC. Jacob married his cousin Barbara (BAC). Barbara's father, George (BA), died in 1821. Following his death, Barbara's brother, who was also named Jacob (BAE), sued the other heirs. These legal papers (in the archives in Raleigh) disclosed the confusing relationships.
Jacob (BCB), Barbara's husband, and Jacob (BAE), Barbara's brother, were close in age. Consequently, Census records are difficult to track. But they can be discerned. Jacob (BCB) appears in the 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census records for Lincoln County. In the 1840 Census, Jacob (BCB) had two grandchildren under age ten (children of his widowed son Joseph) living in his household. In the 1850 Census, both Jacob and Barbara were erroneously shown as age fifty; one of the grandsons, Noah, is still listed in their household.
Barbara died in 1858 at age 79 and is buried in the George Coon cemetery in Lincoln County, NC. Also buried in this private cemetery are two daughters-in-law: Elizabeth Kistler, wife of Joseph (BCBA); and Barbara Kistler, wife of Noah (BCBB).

In the 1860 Census records for Lincoln County (page 254) we find Jacob Kistler, age 74, (i.e., born 1786) in the household of Abraham Carpenter, age 29, and his wife Barbara, age 26. No relationship is indicated; Jacob is identified as having been born in PA.
